Dozens hospitalised with encephalitis in Gorakhpur

Gorakhpur, Apr 15 (ANI): Dozens of children have been admitted to a state-run hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district with symptoms of encephalitis.

The disease first came to India in 1978. Thousands of children have since succumbed to encephalitis and those who survived are either physically disabled or mentally unsound.

"It is not the season for the disease, yet 210 patients have been treated so far. This is negligence on the part of the government, because it does not affect the people in Delhi, Bangalore and bigger cities and people who travel in aeroplanes, have political connections, or are rich, but affects the poor and the backward classes. Therefore, neither the central government nor the state government is unaffected by it," said Dr Radha Mohan Das Aggarwal, a local politician.

Cases of encephalitis are expected to increase with the arrival of monsoon and may continue till December...

LUCKNOW: While the spectre of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) has started haunting the medical fraternity as the monsoon approaches, a mysterious virus has claimed the lives of 49 children in nine districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, better known as the encephalitis zone, since January.

Overall, the virus infected 252 children. Blood tests had shown that only one of these children was infected with the JE virus. The virus in the remaining cases remains unidentified and the doctors are forced to give symptomatic treatment to the children admitted in hospitals.

Ironically, all the cases are being mentioned as Acute Encephalitis Syndrome in the records of the Health Department. Director General (medical health) R R Bharti said that he had written to the director, National Vector Borne Disease Control Centre, New Delhi, to send a team of scientists for the identification of the virus, which is affecting the districts of Mau, Gonda, Basti, Siddharth Nagar, Sant Kabir Nagar, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria and Maharajganj.

A Health Department official said, ?We have also sought the assistance of top research institutes, including the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, National Institute of Virology, and the Centre for Research and Medical Entomology, for the identification of the virus.Bharti said that usually during the monsoon, this region remains in the grip of the JE but this year, the cases started pouring in early winter.

More than twenty five people have been reportedly fallen ill due to Encephalitis in Uttar Pradesh ringing alarm bell in whole of the state .

According to the sources, over 90 deaths have registered in Uttar Pradesh due to encephalitis since January this year, and the situation has aggravated after the onset of monsoon. Although the farmers are happy with the arrival of monsoon, the fear of encephalitis epidemic has also spread.

Talking to the media persons on Sunday, Dr. R N Singh, a child specialist find fault with the administration for overlooking the saying that prevention is being better than cure. "The homework to be done in January and February was not done. Vaccination was not given on time, pigsties were not built, fresh drinking water was not made available, and health related information was not given to people," Dr. Singh said. "So, the possibility of this was expected," he added.

Local residents, the parents of affected children, in particular too blamed the government for lack of support. "We don't know the reason that whenever monsoon arrives ,this disease spreads and the whole village gets worried, but we don't get any help from the government. Neither have we any solution for this disease," said Amit Rai, a parent. Since the beginning of this year 508 patients have been admitted in hospitals out of which 92 death cases have been reported.

Lucknow: In the last three years, over 30 lakh (3 million)doses of Japanese Encephalitis vaccines supplied by the Centre have gone waste in the state following the state government?s refusal to use it. The stock, the state claimed, was ?below standard? and ?unusable?.


Another 15 lakh doses have been wasted too ? its date of expiry was July 24. The stock was meant to be used for the special JE drive in eastern Uttar Pradesh, but state had refused to use it, alleging that it was unfit.


The Union health ministry has asked the state in writing about the reasons for not conducting the special drive and not using the 15 lakh doses sent in May. The letter was sent a week ago by Centre?s Assistant Commissioner, Immunisation, said an official from the Union health ministry.


Dr VM Katoch, Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will be meeting state Health Minister Anant Kumar Mishra on Thursday to sort out the issue.

A few days ago, Katoch had visited Eastern Uttar Pradesh toaccess the ground situation and met the health staff in Gorakhpur district.


The state government, however, maintains that the matter has been sorted out.


?There are no pending issues with the Centre now,? said


Pradeep Shukla, Principal Secretary, Medical and Health. ?There was a letter, but during the recent visit of Katoch to eastern Uttar Pradesh, everything has been discussed in detail,? he added, admitting that Katoch will meet the state health minister.


?The date for expiry of the stock sent in May was July 24 and so, we wanted to know about the status of the campaign,? said the Union health ministry official. ?The state government did not reply and now the entire stock has been wasted.?


The stock sent was usable, but the state government did not use it, he said. ?They said only a part of it was usable but they did not even utilise that and merely decided to keep it with them, leading to the wastage of the entire stock. Now, Katoch is personally looking into the matter.?


Over 100 children have succumbed to encephalitis in eastern Uttar Pradesh so far and over 500 cases have been reported.

The two-month long deadlock between the state and the Union governments over conducting a special Japanese Encephalitis (JE) vaccination campaign in the seven high-risk districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh finally ended after both agreed to each other?s demand.


While the Central government has agreed to send fresh stock of JE vaccine as demanded by the state government, the latter in turn has agreed to conduct the drive in October.


?We will give 74 lakh doses of JE vaccine from the fresh stock to the state government as per their demand. The two stocks of fresh consignments are expected to arrive in the first week of September and first week of October,? said a senior officer of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.


Though the deadlock has ended, the vaccination campaign will not provide immunity to the children in Gorakhpur and Basti division during the peak season of the disease that begins from July and ends in October. The campaign will only provide immunity to the children till the onset of the peak season next year.

The immunisation drive was supposed to begin in February this year but it failed to take off as both the governments objected to the demand of the other, thereby resulting in delay.


In the meantime, it was decided to conduct the drive in the last week of May but the vaccines sent by Union Ministry of Health and Family welfare were rejected by the state health department alleging that the supplied stock was inadequate and defective. The drive then got postponed and subsequently it was suspended for an indefinite period.


Senior officials of state health department who are in Delhi to attend the review meeting of National Rural Health Mission also confirmed this.


?There is no deadlock now. We are planned to launch the special vaccination campaign after the rainy season, sometime in October,? said Dr S P Ram, Director General, Family Welfare, Uttar Pradesh.

Japanese encephalitis [JE] has claimed the lives of 2 children [in
Gorakhpur], taking the toll in the viral infection in the district to 149
this year [2010], a health official said today [11 Aug 2010]. Over 100
people suffering from acute encephalitis syndrome are being treated at
various hospitals in Gorakhpur division [Uttar Pradesh (UP)], additional
director, Health, UK Srivastava said. These include patients from Bihar
[state] and Nepal also, he said. 29 districts of eastern UP, some parts of
Bihar and neighbouring Nepal have been hit hard by the virus.

Though the water borne encephalitis is caused due to consumption of
contaminated water in which the enterovirus develops, JE is [transmitted]
by mosquito bite. Pigs and birds are host and carriers of the JE virus.

Gorakhpur, Aug 13 (PTI) Five more persons, including three children, died of encephalitis today taking the number of deaths due to the vector-borne disease in eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh to 559 this year.

There were three children, one each from Kushinagar, Siddhartha Nagar and Gorakhpur districts, among the five persons who succumbed to the disease, health officials said here.

As many as 103 deaths have occurred this year till July in eastern Uttar Pradesh due to the mosquito-borne Japanese Encephalitis disease, the Rajya Sabha was informed Tuesday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Health Dinesh Trivedi denied that the disease is taking on an epidemic form in eastern Uttar Pradesh.


JE is a mosquito borne disease that affects the central nervous system and can cause severe complications and death.


Last year, 774 people died due to JE as compared to 684 people in 2008 in Uttar Pradesh.


The minister said the central government has been providing vaccine and logistic support since 2006 to the state to combat the disease. The re-vaccination drive was launched again in 2008 when cases started resurfacing.


Trivedi said the state government was provided 15.47 lakh vaccine doses till May this year, but the supply was discontinued after reservations over its quality was raised.


He said a small quantity was found to be unusable. But the rest was fine. He, however, said the same vaccine was also used in Kaithal in Haryana.

Two more dies of encephalitis, toll 174 in eastern UP

Two persons died of encephalitis in Gorakhpur on Wednesday taking the death toll in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region to 174 this year, a health official said here. The dead belonged to Kushinagar district. Additional Director (Health) UK Srivastava said 17 new patients were admitted today in BRD Medical College Hospital here.

Of the total 174 deaths, 165 died in BRD Hospital while the remaining expired in other government hospitals of the region - Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Kushinagar, Maharajganj and Deoria districts.

As many as 140 patients are presently undergoing treatment at the BRD Hospital while 15 are admitted at various government hospitals of the region, he said.

Four more die of encephalitis, toll climbs to 185 in Uttar Pradesh

Four persons died of encephalitis here today taking the number of people killed by the disease in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region this year to 185, a health official said.


Of the dead three belonged to Gorakhpur and one was from Basti district.


As many as 140 encephalitis patients are undergoing treatment in one hospital here, while 22 are admitted at various government hospitals of the region, he said.

With 4 more encephalitis deaths in the region, the total number of
people killed by the disease in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region this
year [2010] has gone up to 189, health officials said. Out of the 32
fresh cases of the deadly disease that were reported yesterday [23
Aug 2010], there have been 4 deaths. Children in particular have
become targets of this deadly disease with 1179 cases reported alone
among children this year [2010].

29 districts of eastern UP, some parts of Bihar and neighbouring
Nepal have been hit hard by the virus. Deaths due to encephalitis
have been reported from Gorahkpur, Deoria, Mahrajganj, Kushinagar
district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Nepal, Additional
Director Health, U K Srivastava said.

About 170 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals
across the region, they added.

[Previous reports of this outbreak indicated that both Japanese
encephalitis virus and other unnamed viruses (responsible for
so-called acute encephalitis syndrome) were the etiological agents
responsible for the encephalitis cases. This report mentions neither,
although it refers to "the virus," implying that only one is
involved. It would be of interest to know the results of laboratory
tests to determine the identity of the viruses involved in these cases.

Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 26 (PTI) Ten persons, mostly children died of encephalitis in Gorakhpur during past twenty four, taking the death toll due to the disease in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region to 206 this year so far, health officials said here.

All the ten deaths occurred in BRD Medical College Hospital here; between Wednesday and Thursday, the Additional Director (Health) U K Srivastava said adding that one patient died on Tuesday.

Of total 206 deaths, 197 occurred in BRD MCH while the remaining expired in other government hospitals of the region - Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti and Deoria districts.

He said, 14 new patients were admitted today in BRD Medical College Hospital.

As many as 146 patients are presently undergoing treatment at the BRD MCH and various government hospitals of the region, he said.

Encephalitis kills 211 in India, toll likely to soar

NEW DELHI ? At least 211 people, mostly children, have died in an outbreak of Japanese encephalitis in an impoverished region of northern Indian and the death toll is likely to soar, officials said Saturday.

Eastern parts of India's most populous state are ravaged by encephalitis each year as malnourished children succumb to the virus which is transmitted by mosquitoes from pigs to humans but this is one of the worst outbreaks, officials said.

"Most of the deaths have occurred in the Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh state since the monsoon struck the region in July," regional health officer U.K. Srivastava told AFP by telephone from Gorakhpur.

The deaths of five more children on Friday pushed the toll to 211, with hundreds sick, some two to a bed, in hospitals in Gorakhpur, a deeply neglected area of 14 million people, he said.

"A total of 1,299 patients had been admitted in hospitals until Friday in Gorakhpur," which is the epicentre of the outbreak, and "more encephalitis patients are coming into our hospitals," Srivastava told AFP.

"We fear the total number of encephalitis cases will go up to at least 3,500 and the death rate will be at a ratio of around 20 percent," Srivastava said...

Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 28 (PTI) Four more patients succumbed to encephalitis in Gorakhpur today, taking the death toll in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region to 215 this year, a health official said here.

All the four deaths occurred in BRD Medical College Hospital here, Additional Director (Health) UK Srivastava said adding that of the total 215 deaths 205 occurred in BRD Medical College Hospital while the remaining in other government hospitals of the region - Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti and Deoria districts.

He said 13 new patients were admitted today in BRD Medical College Hospital.

Of four deaths occurred today two belonged to Gorakhpur, one from Mahrajganj and one from neighbouring state Bihar.

161 patients are undergoing treatment at the BRD Medical College Hospital and various government hospitals of the region, he said.

1300 cases of encephalitis reported in Gorakhpur

In Uttar Pradesh, the deadly encephalitis is surging again as three more patients have succumbed during past twenty four hours in Gorakhpur.

Correspondent reports that of 1300 cases of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome 90 have been tested positive for Japanese Encephalitis since January this year. Rest of the cases were of water-borne encephalitis. As many as 211 deaths have occurred in the eastern districts due to the disease this year.

The additional director (health) of Gorakhpur division U.K. Srivastava said that the disease mainly spreads through the mosquito bite and contaminated water.

"There are two times the numbers of patients of AES here in proportion to JE. This one is worse because it ruins all these organs in the body which JE didn't and that's why it's harder to save the patient," said Dr Khushwaha, HOD, Paediatrics Department, Gorakhpur medical college.

Unfortunately, the reports do not indicate whether any or how many tests were negative. Nonetheless it seems that more than one causative agent is at work here.

Encephalitis claims four more lives in UP

Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 30 (PTI) Four more persons have died of encephalitis here, taking the number of victims claimed by the disease in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region this year to 219, a health official today said. All the four deaths occurred at BRD Medical College Hospital here during the past two days, Additional Director (Health) U K Srivastava said. The dead included one each from Gorakhpur, Deoria and Kushinagar districts of UP and one from neighbouring state Bihar, he said. Meanwhile, 45 new encephalitis patients have been admitted in different hospitals of the region. Out of a total of 219 deaths due to the disease this year, 208 occurred at BRD Medical College Hospital alone, he said.

The patients belonging to neighbouring Deoria and Basti districts died at BRD Medical College Hospital here during the, Additional Director (Health) U K Srivastava said.

9 more die of Japanese encephalitis, toll reaches 231

Gorakhpur (UP), Sep 2 (PTI) Nine more persons today succumbed to Japanese encephalitis taking the toll in Uttar Pradesh's eastern region to 231, officials said. The nine were undergoing treatment at BRD Medical College Hospital here, Additional Director (Health) U K Srivastava said. Four of the deceased hailed from Gorakhpur, two from Kushinagar and one each from Sant Kabir Nagar and Siddharth Nagar. One victim hailed from neighbouring Bihar, Srivastava said. As many as 26 encephalitis patients have been admitted in BRD Medical Hospital since yesterday. At present, 227 patients were being treated in various government hospitals.

Encephalitis death toll touches 269

Maharajganj, Sep 4 (PTI) Three more children succumbed to Japanese encephalitis as the death toll from the dreaded disease in the eastern region of Uttar Pradesh this year rose to 269.

As many as 1589 people had been afflicted with the brain fever in Gorakhpur, Basti and other districts of eastern UP since January, Additional Director (Health) U K Srivastava said.

0f these, 269 had succumbed to the disease with three children dying since last evening, he said.
