A total of 59 people have been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder, in Pune. Of these, 12 are on ventilator support.

Pune Divisional Commissioner Dr Chandrakant Pulkundwar on Wednesday called a meeting of state and civic health officials to review the situation after hospitals started reporting cases of GBS, mostly from Sinhagad area to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

He told The Indian Express that officials have been directed to take a thorough medical history of the affected persons. GBS is an autoimmune disease that produces antibodies which attack the body’s nerves. “It is a sequelae of either gastrointestinal or influenza-like illness. However, there is no need to panic,” Dr Pulkundwar said.

People have, however, been urged to boil water for drinking, avoid eating stale or uncovered food. As per state health department data, 33 of the 59 patients are from rural parts of Pune, 11 from within municipal corporation limits and 12 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Three patients are from other districts...

First suspected GBS death in Maharashtra, cases in Pune surge to 101
4h

PUNE: The Maharashtra health department reported Sunday what is suspected to be the first death linked to the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) outbreak concentrated in Pune as the caseload spiked to 101 with 28 more confirmed infections, based on updated surveillance data, reports Steffy Thevar. The daily bulletin said the suspected GBS death occurred in Solapur but did not give details.

Sixteen of the patients diagnosed with this rare but treatable condition are currently on ventilator support. Around 19 of those with symptoms are below nine, while the 50-80 age group accounts for 23 cases.

A patient hospitalised on Jan 9 is suspected to be the first GBS case within the Pune cluster. Tests have revealed the Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in some biological samples drawn from hospitalised patients. C Jejuni causes about a third of all GBS cases worldwide and is also responsible for the most severe infections.

Authorities are sampling Pune's water, especially in areas that are reporting cases. Test results released Saturday showed that a well near Khadakwasla Dam, Pune's main water reservoir, had high levels of the bacterium E. coli. But officials said it was unclear if the well was being used at all. Residents have been advised to boil water and heat their food before consumption...

Rare case of BBE reported in Pune GBS patient
ByVicky Pathare
Jan 30, 2025 08:22 AM IST

Doctors at Poona Hospital have reported a rare case of Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE), an uncommon inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system, in a suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) patient. The 50-year-old man has been diagnosed with meningitis, encephalitis, and myelitis.

A resident of Sinhagad Road, the patient was admitted to the hospital on January 28. He had a history of gastrointestinal issues, and a Biofire Stool Gastrointestinal panel confirmed Campylobacter jejuni, a bacterial infection known to trigger GBS.

“Tests confirmed multiple complications: cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis showed meningitis—an inflammation of the brain and spinal cord; an MRI confirmed encephalitis and myelitis, indicating inflammation of the spinal cord. Additionally, nerve conduction velocity (NCV) tests confirmed GBS,” said Dr Ameet Dravid, an infectious disease expert at Poona Hospital.

Dr Dravid noted that the patient’s condition is highly unusual. “This is a very rare presentation, and the exact cause needs further investigation. The patient initially had gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea and vomiting. Later, he developed weakness in all four limbs. He also has urinary retention, facial weakness, and drowsiness—symptoms not commonly seen in GBS patients.”...

Now, suspected cases are surfacing in Thergaon, Mundhwa, Maval, Khed, Chikhali, Pimple Gurav, Wagholi, Dhankawdi, Talegaon, Chakan, Pimpri, Kothrud, Ravet, and Moshi, among other parts of Pune

The outbreak of suspected Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in the city has spread beyond the initial cluster in the Sinhagad Road area, with new cases emerging across the district.

According to the public health department officials, GBS cases were initially reported in clusters from Nanded Gaon, Sinhagad Road, Nanded City, Khadakwasla, and Dhayari. Now, suspected cases are surfacing in Thergaon, Mundhwa, Maval, Khed, Chikhali, Pimple Gurav, Wagholi, Dhankawdi, Talegaon, Chakan, Pimpri, Kothrud, Ravet, and Moshi, among other parts of Pune. However, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials are yet to identify a common link between the new and earlier cluster cases.

As of now, 158 cases of GBS (127 confirmed) and 5 suspected deaths have been reported statewide. These include 31 patients from PMC, 83 from newly added villages in PMC area, 18 from PCMC, 18 from Pune rural, and 8 from other districts.

“The spread from one area to many is worrying. We’re concerned for our children’s safety. The civic authorities must act quickly,” said Amol Jadhav, a resident of Kothrud.

Dr Nina Borade, health chief of PMC, stated that last year Pune recorded 194 cases of GBS. “These cases have always occurred, but now they are being reported more systematically. Citizens should not panic—these are sporadic cases. However, we’ve initiated surveillance in the newly affected areas,” she said.

In the Sinhagad Road cluster, a common water source was identified, but no such link has been found for the new cases, according to Dr Borade...
