Bhubaneswar: Amid bird flu outbreak in Odisha, two human cases of avian influenza have been detected in the state, said Gokula Nanda Mallik, Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister today.

Samples from Pipili and Sakhigopal of Puri district were sent to Bhopal for testing, and the reports were positive. So far, 30,000 chickens have been culled while sanitization and other precautionary measures are being undertaken, the minister said.

He clarified that there is no restriction on consuming chicken in areas not affected by bird flu. To compensate the farmers for their losses, the department has proposed a plan to pay Rs 20 for each small chicken and Rs 70 for each large chicken. The department has also been directed to take precautionary steps to prevent the spread of bird flu.

In the areas where bird flu has been detected, restrictions have been imposed on the transportation and consumption of chickens.

However, the Public Health Department has clarified that there is no confirmed report of bird flu in humans. Samples have been collected from a person in Puri who showed symptoms, and the results are expected within seven days. Samples will also be collected from those who were in contact with the individual, the department said.
On the other hand, a team of doctors reached Durgadaspur in Pipili to take the person, who is suspected to have been infected, to the hospital. He will be taken to Mangalpur Hospital in Pipili, where he will be kept in the isolation ward.

Bhubaneswar: A man, suspected of having contracted bird flu, tested negative on Wednesday, reports Ashok Pradhan. “The man’s samples tested negative. People have no reason to be apprehensive,” director of public health, Nilakantha Mishra, told TOI. The man, who was part of a culling team, had exhibited flu-like symptoms. He was placed in isolation at Mangalpur community health centre as a precautionary measure and treated with oseltamivir.

Avian flu outbreak in Odisha's Kendrapara, 2K birds culled

KENDRAPARA: Approximately 2,000 birds were culled in the district on Sunday, and the carcasses buried in deep pits lined with lime after an outbreak of avian flu (H5N1) was confirmed.

The confirmation came after the High Security Laboratory in Bhopal reported that 10 dead chickens from Andara and Balia gram panchayats tested positive for the H5N1 strain, said additional district veterinary officer (Disease Control), Kendrapara Dr Mrutyunjay Mohanty.

Sources said, 14 Rapid Action Teams involved in the culling operations will be quarantined for 10 days.

A mysterious fever has gripped Birikote village under Mohana block in Odisha’s Gajapati district, raising serious concerns among the villagers as the cause remains undetermined. The unknown disease, which people initially thought was malaria, has already affected 30-40 people, including children in the village.

The mystery illness has resulted in widespread panic in the village. The patients are showing symptoms of high fever, joint pain, severe headache, swelling of limbs, and sensation during urination. With most of the villagers hailing from the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, they have been deprived of medical assistance and are battling for their lives at their homes.

No medical team has allegedly reached the village despite the number of cases rising every day.

“All of a sudden, I experienced a fever with severe pain in my joints. It is not just joint pain; there is pain in the fingers and body. The limbs and hands are swelling. There is a severe headache and high fever,” a patient said.


“The affected persons are high on fever. There is also severe swelling of their hands and feet with serious joint pain. Three of them were taken to the patient. But, the doctor sent us away and told us to come after three days. Those who have money went to Mohana hospital, but the poor are suffering now,” a local woman Sanjukta Singh said.

“More than 30 to 40 people have been affected by the disease. Just now, an auto-rickshaw full of people left the village for hospital,” she added.

When contacted, Prasanta Sahu, a doctor at Birikote Community Health Centre said, “They are showing symptoms of fever, knee and joint pains, sensation during urination. We tested them for Malaria, but the test was negative. I have sent the sample for the test to Mohana for examination.”

A medical team will be sent to the village for examination, he added.
