H5N8 killed painted storks in Madhya Pradesh zoo, culling of remaining ones likely
BHOPAL: High Security Animal Disease Laboratory (HSADL) at Bhopal has detected the virus strain in the two samples sent by Gwalior zoo as H5N8 - a subtype of the Influenza A virus which is one of the lower pathogenic subtypes. Zoo has been shut down till further orders from state government.
After shut down of the National Zoological Park and Hauz Khas Deer Park in Delhi amid bird flu (H5 Avian influenza) scare, Madhya Pradesh government had sounded alert following a sudden death of 15 Painted Storks kept captive at Gwalior zoo.

Suspected bird flu wipes out all painted storks at Gwalior zoo

Six more painted storks died between Sunday night and Monday morning at the municipal zoo here taking the number of birds which died due to a suspected new sub-type of bird flu at the zoo to 24.

With this, the entire population of painted storks numbering 24 at the civic-run zoo has been wiped out.

All the painted storks are dead, Gwalior Municipal Corporation commissioner Anay Dwivedi said on Monday.

Avian flu: MP to test faecal samples of migratory birds

In the wake of recent painted stork deaths in Gwalior zoo, the animal husbandry department has decided to collect samples of faecal droppings of migratory birds for lab tests. The reports will help the department determine the source of the H5N8 virus.
Over 40 species of migratory birds come to Madhya Pradesh from trans-Himalayan countries between October and March. Every year thousands of migratory birds flock to Bhopal.
Reportedly, birds with common Arctic breeding ground have played a major role in the global spread of avian influenza virus in the past. Studies also indicate that H5N8 viruses might have originated in China and then moved to other countries.
