Malappuram : The test results of all six people with Nipah symptoms in Malappuram have come back negative. All six were in the high-risk category on the contact list. A 42-year-old woman from Valanchery, who was confirmed to have Nipah, remains in critical condition.

The minister said that 49 people are on the contact list. Of these, 45 are high-risk contacts. 12 are family members. A total of six people had symptoms of the disease. In the latest case, a 42-year-old woman from Valanchery in Malappuram district is in a coma and continues to be supported by a ventilator after contracting the deadly virus.
...
District Medical Officer (DMO) R Renuka confirmed to Down To Earth (DTE) on May 12 that the patient remains stable, with no signs of improvement or deterioration.
...
This patient’s positive test for the Nipah virus on May 8 marked the third reported case from Malappuram district in the past two years. The earlier cases identified last year were a 14-year-old boy who tested positive on July 21, and a 24-year-old adult on September 15.
...
It is generally assumed that the Nipah virus can be transmitted to other animals by consuming contaminated fruit exposed to saliva or urine from infected fruit bats or through direct contact with other infected animals. Despite this, research conducted in the state has not pinpointed the exact mode of transmission in all the reported Nipah cases.

Anoop Kumar AS, a critical care specialist involved in diagnosing the Nipah virus during previous outbreaks, mentioned that although fruit samples and various other specimens have been collected and tested, the virus has not been detected in the samples from the state. “All fruit samples have tested negative,” Kumar stated.
...
The health department also launched a joint outbreak investigation on May 12 with the support of the animal husbandry department. This comprehensive approach includes surveillance of domestic animals in the region, examination of recent changes in animal behaviour, and collection of samples from domestic animals. The investigation will also look into recent deaths among domestic animals and collect samples wherever possible.

“We are limited in including wild animals due to the difficulty of tracking and testing them. Therefore, our focus will be more on cats and dogs, which are more accessible and likely to have close contact with humans,” said Malappuram District Surveillance Officer C Shubin.

Doctors said the latest Nipah patient exhibited acute encephalitis syndrome and had classic symptoms of dengue in the beginning when admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College hospital. She tested positive for dengue, and hence, Nipah was not suspected. It was only when her condition did not improve that samples were sent for Nipah testing two days later.

Suspicion on bats; Central team to submit report soon

Tuesday 20 May, 2025 | 2:46 AM

Malappuram: The central team has confirmed the constant presence of bats in the house of a woman infected with Nipah in Valanchery. Since there are many fruits in the vicinity of the house, fruit-eating bats come here. Samples of their excrement have been collected and sent to the ICAR National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases Lab in Bhopal for testing. Samples of the mango bitten by the bat the other day and jackfruit, iron tamarind, etc. have been collected yesterday. These will also be sent for testing. The central team has visited various places where the patient sought treatment and inspected them. The study report will be submitted to the state health department soon.
...
Nipah has not left.

Three Nipah cases have been reported in the district in the last nine months. Although experts from the central and state health departments have examined these places, the source of the disease is still unknown. A study by the National Institute of Virology, Pune, has shown that the Nipah virus has not left the state since it was first confirmed in 2018. Experts have warned that this is the possibility of Nipah cases in the district.

Ten Nipah cases have been reported in the state from 2001 to 2025. In Bangladesh, where Nipah has been confirmed, the disease has been confirmed nine times from 2001 to 2023. In 2018, the presence of the virus was found in 25 percent of the fruit bats in the area where the disease was confirmed. In tests conducted in Pandikkad and Thiruvalli, antibodies against the virus were found in 20 percent of the fruit bats. Data collected in Valanchery may also lead to a similar finding.

The central team is conducting inspections in the Nipah-affected area. The district health department will receive the report only after submitting it to the state health department. Currently, Nipah prevention activities and precautions have been strengthened.
