The livestock population growth leads to the emergence of new animal epidemics worldwide and poses serious problems for developing countries that threaten food security, according to a report released Friday.

Epidemics in recent years, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS, in English) and swine influenza H1N1, causing economic losses of billions of dollars.

About 700 million people have farm animals in developing countries and these animals generate up to 40 percent of household income, said the report by the International Research Institute for Livestock.

"Rich countries are effectively addressing animal diseases, but in Africa and Asia, the capacity of veterinary services for tracking and controlling outbreaks is dangerously behind the intensification of cattle," said John McDermott and Grace Delia based institute in Nairobi, in a statement on the report.

The report warned that rapid urbanization and climate change as unpredictable factors could act by altering the present distribution of diseases, sometimes "dramatically worse."

The two researchers urged the developing countries to improve surveillance of animal diseases and accelerate the testing procedures to contain livestock epidemics before they spread.
