HCMC [Ho Chi Minh City] sees rash of measles victims

Children's hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City said on [19 Nov 2009] the
incidence of measles among children is rising.
Children Hospital II has admitted 158 toddlers with the disease since
the beginning of November [2009], with one of them, a 10-month-old
baby from Go Vap District, dying.
So far this year [2009] it has treated 881 patients.
The city's Tropical Diseases hospital received more than 50 children
with measles on [19 Nov 2009].

[Measles outbreaks in Viet Nam have been reported starting in
February 2009, with unusual outbreaks among adults in Hanoi, Bac
Giang, Hung Yen, and nearby provinces. It is considered to be due to
improper childhood vaccinations of the affected people. Measles
outbreaks were also detected in children during February and June
2009 (see prior PRO/MBDS postings listed below).

[The above report mentions an increase in pediatric cases, but does
not give the age distribution of cases or vaccination status of the
cases, so it is difficult to assess if the outbreak is related to
vaccine failure or to failure to vaccinate, or if the majority of
cases are occurring in the population not as yet eligible for
vaccine. Of interest are recent newswires mentioning that Viet Nam
is n.w self sufficient in local production of measles vaccine. (see

According to a recent WHO/UNICEF report on vaccination coverages as
of 2007, Viet Nam had a drop off in measles vaccination coverages in
2007 where only 83 percent of target aged children had been
vaccinated with measles containing vaccine (see

According to this report, the current recommended schedule for
measles vaccination in Viet Nam is a 2 dose schedule with the 1st
dose at 9 months old, and the 2nd dose at 6 years old.
Again, it would be of interest to know the epidemiology of the cases
to interpret the significance of the apparent increase in reported
