INDIANAPOLIS -- Children began coughing, crying and vomiting as parents and lifeguards around an Indianapolis pool realized there was something wrong with the water.

The Indianapolis Star reports that a toxic combination of chemicals was pumped into the Garfield Park pool at around 2:00pm local time Thursday sending 80 people to four local hospitals. There was no indication that anyone present had been seriously harmed.

Emergency responders feared for the worst initially, referring to the situation as one of "mass casualties."

IndyParks: Garfield pool will remain closed pending inspection results

A city spokeswoman said the pool at Garfield Park will remain closed despite a Marion County Health Department statement clearing the way for it to reopen.

John T. Althardt, spokesman for the Marion County Health Department, said health officials met with the pool?s contractor today to try to find out what happened. The problem is the pool employee who was working on Thursday was still in the hospital, he said.
