The Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed yesterday Wednesday that, after 32 years, Peru registers a case of acute poliomyelitis, a disease that mainly affects the nerves of the spinal cord or brain stem.

The patient is a one-year-old baby, a resident of the Nuevo Belén de Loreto Awajún community, whose guardians postponed his vaccination, according to a statement released by the office. The minor presented fever, cough and weakness in the lower limbs. Initially, acute flaccid paralysis was suspected.

After the identification, the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) issued an epidemiological alert to strengthen "epidemiological surveillance and intensify the active search for cases, as well as implement prevention and control measures to mitigate the impact of damage to the public health of the country.

The last case of polio in the country occurred in August 1991 in Pichanaki (Junín) and was, at the same time, the definitive one in the region, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
