PORT BLAIR: Several strains of Shigella "the major cause of diarrheal diseases among children in India" have become resistant to the latest generation of antibiotics in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
In a serious scientific finding, researchers from the Regional Medical Research Centre (Port Blair) have found that Shigella isolates found in stool samples of children, living in these islands, were resistant to all the three third-generation cephalosporins tested.
Currently, ciprofloxacin is recommended as the drug of choice by the World Health Organization (WHO) ...
