Louisville's hepatitis A outbreak: Cases spread to Indiana and now some schools are closed
Darcy Costello, Louisville Courier Journal Published 7:27 a.m. ET March 16, 2018 | Updated 4:01 p.m. ET March 16, 2018

An outbreak of hepatitis A in Kentucky, centered in Jefferson County, has spread to more than 100 people ? a significant increase in a state that typically sees about 20 cases per year.

Confirmed cases have continued to grow since the outbreak was declared in November when there were 19 cases in Louisville. At the time, officials said common risk factors included homelessness or drug use.

Since then, at least two employees in the food service industry have been added to the city's list of victims and more than 20 cases identified in Southern Indiana prompted the closure of at least one school district's campus ? which includes three Henryville schools.

Jefferson County is ground zero for the highly contagious liver infection, with more than 130 of the state's cases and the first death linked to the virus...

...It spread across the river to Indiana

Clark County's health officer Dr. Eric Yazel said Friday the county has 25 hepatitis A cases, with two more that are pending.

Of those, most have been connected to the Louisville outbreak, which makes sense given the "migration of population" between the two regions, Yazel said.

"It's almost like one big general outbreak in Kentuckiana," he said, adding that the county is treating the number of cases with the highest level of precaution...

Hepatitis A outbreak hits Southern Indiana with links to outbreak in Kentucky
Shari Rudavsky

State health officials have linked a hepatitis A outbreak in Kentucky to an increase in cases of the infectious liver disease in Southern Indiana.

Health Dept. Reports First Indiana Death Associated With Hep-A Outbreak
The state recently obtained additional Hepatitis A vaccines to help at-risk counties vaccinate certain populations.
Steve Burns/WFIU-WTIU News

The state says it?s confirmed the first death in Indiana associated with a multi-state hepatitis A outbreak.

The Indiana State Department of Health isn?t releasing any more information about the death, citing privacy laws.

Hepatitis A is a highly-contagious liver disease that can be spread through fecal-oral means. Someone can contract the virus through contact with an infected person or contaminated food.

While Indiana typically sees about 20 cases a year, there are 214 hepatitis A cases in the state associated with the outbreak. Seven counties are affected so far...

[h=2]Indiana Hepatitis A Outbreak[/h] Since November 2017, the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) has been investigating an outbreak of acute hepatitis A virus (HAV). Cases have been infected with HAV strains genetically linked to outbreaks across the United States. Indiana has an average of 20 cases of hepatitis A per 12 month period.
Indiana is one of 10 states experiencing a hepatitis A outbreak, and outbreak-related cases have been confirmed across the state. Information on other outbreaks can be accessed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. Transmission is presumed to occur person to person; no contaminated commercial food product has been identified. Based on CDC guidelines, populations who are homeless, transient, incarcerated or use illicit drugs and their close direct contacts are considered at increased risk of exposure to hepatitis A.
If you believe you have been exposed to hepatitis A or are homeless, use injection or non-injection drugs, were recently incarcerated, or had contact with someone who has hepatitis A, contact your healthcare provider about hepatitis A vaccine.
To reduce the risk of hepatitis A transmission, people who have not received two doses of hepatitis A vaccine may ask their healthcare providers for protection. Additionally, always wash your hands with soap and water after going to the bathroom, after changing diapers and before preparing meals for yourself and others. Do not attend work or school if you are experiencing symptoms of hepatitis A, which include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, tiredness, stomach ache, fever, dark-colored (cola) urine, light-colored stool and jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes). Symptoms may take as many as 50 days from exposure to appear.
Using the outbreak definition* (see below), the ISDH will update this website each Friday to reflect counties that have five or more outbreak-related cases. The ISDH updated the outbreak definition on 7/20/2018 and may reflect additional cases that were not included in previous outbreak case counts.

State Says Hepatitis A Outbreak Slowing
By Barbara Brosher ? 13 hours ago

The state says the spread of Hepatitis A is slowing down, but it?s still seeing new cases associated with the outbreak.

The state started investigating an uptick in cases last November. More than 770 Hoosiers have been diagnosed with the highly contagious liver infection over the past year.

Data from the Indiana State Department of Health shows the number of new Hepatitis A cases started a downward trend last month.
