Whooping cough making a scary comeback

Cole was four years old when his baby brother Dylan was born. Their mother, Mariah Bianchi, had a cough and runny nose when she gave birth. She asked doctors about her symptoms, but she says no one thought it could be pertussis.

"She said we don't see pertussis anymore. We don't see whooping cough anymore so you probably just have a cold,? says Mariah.

Three and a half weeks after Dylan arrived he stopped eating, too weak and tired to stay awake.

"Every hour after that, he got sicker and sicker. Basically his immune system started failing, his kidney function failed, he started to develop heart failure. In about 36 hours they were doing CPR. We didn't have a lot of choices. It took about two days for that to happen,? says Mariah.

"Death isn't just something you read or see about or hear about. It's a case like ours. We had a baby, a healthy baby, there was nothing out of the ordinary, but pertussis came in and took our son away from us,? says David Bianchi, Dylan?s father.

Lake and Porter counties have seen double-digit numbers of cases of pertussis in a year that's seen the state's largest outbreak of the illness since the 1950s.

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a contagious illness caused by bacteria characterized with a cough that ends in a "whooping" sound. So far this year, Lake County has seen 15 reported cases and Porter County has had 26. As of Dec. 10, 600 cases of pertussis have been reported across the state...
