Importation of uncooked muttonbird meat from Australia has been banned because of the risk of avian flu.

The importation of uncooked muttonbird meat from Australia has been banned by BioSecurity New Zealand because of the risk of avian flu.

The regulator's spokesperson Rachelle Linwood says changes to the import standards came about because the original rules were out of date.

She says the standards were made prior to the avian flu being seen as a global risk.

Ms Linwood says muttonbird meat could still enter the country if it has been cooked in accordance with biosecurity regulations.

She says there has been only one shipment of the meat imported in the past 10 years.
