These are a few examples from some of the more scientific parts of the meeting
-Nipah virus appears to infect the alveolar and bronchial epithelium in pigs and cats and has shown some evidence of human to human transmission in Bangladesh
-TSE (Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies) such as BSE in Europe and North America need continued surveillance. Also the risk of these diseases in SE Asia is considered high but not well surveyed
-Rift Vally Fever some elegant studies were presented by M. Bouley of the Institut Pasteur of some work she did in collaboration with labs in Germany and Canada the NSs protein appears to have multiple functions including inhibiting interferon leading to increased virulence and also appears to interact with SOCS proteins, a family of 8 proteins that negatively regulate cytokine signaling
-Anthrax expert M.E. Hugh-Jones presented some of his work using GIS mapping of ecology and geography such as soil moisture and pH that can predict areas at high risk for anthrax which can improve surveillance and response efforts
