Illinois - Norovirus outbreak at three long-term care facilities and possibly school

WOODSTOCK ? An outbreak of norovirus has been reported after 129 people became ill in three long-term care facilities, according to the McHenry County Department of Health.

Fourteen cases of norovirus, which is highly contagious, have been confirmed, and five people have been hospitalized.

Health department spokeswoman Debra Quackenbush declined to release the names of the facilities where the virus was found, but said that their administrators were cooperating and taking steps to prevent it from spreading.

Unlike influenza, which is an upper respiratory virus, norovirus generally is the culprit that causes what is referred to as ?stomach flu.? It affects the intestinal tract and causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms usually last between 24 and 48 hours.

Norovirus is common but can be fatal in rare cases, particularly when the person has a compromised immune system, Quackenbush said. The illness, which easily transfers from person to person, cannot be treated with antibiotics.

The last norovirus outbreak was in January 2009 and involved five long-term care facilities. There were 20 confirmed cases and 129 people ill, Quackenbush said. Ten people were hospitalized, but there were no fatalities.

To prevent the spread of the norovirus, the MCDH recommends:

? Frequent hand washing, especially after using the toilet and before eating and preparing food.

? Thorough cleaning and disinfecting of high-touch areas, such as phones, railings and tables, and using bleach-based household disinfectants.

? Immediately removing and washing clothing or linens that might be contaminated with diarrhea or vomit by using hot water and soap.

WOODSTOCK ? The number of people who have become ill since a norovirus outbreak at three long-term care facilities has climbed to 138, according to McHenry County Department of Health officials.

The outbreak happened at The Fountains at Crystal Lake, in Crystal Lake; Hearthstone Manor, in Woodstock; and Mercy Harvard Care Center Nursing Home, in Harvard; according to information obtained through a Northwest Herald Freedom of Information request.

Health department spokeswoman Debra Quackenbush said the new cases since last week involved employees at two of the three care facilities, not patients.

PITTSFIELD, Ill. (WGEM) ? Nearly one-third of students at Pikeland Middle School in Pittsfield stayed have been absent this week due to a case of gastrointestinal illness.

Pikeland Supt. Paula Hawley said the district has had absences of 175 and 115 students, respectively, on Wednesday and Thursday due to gastrointestinal illnesses in the middle school building that houses roughly 600 students in grades 3-8.

"It just hit yesterday all of a sudden," Hawley said. "Enrollment Monday and Tuesday was normal."

Hawley said that the illnesses are not confirmed to be connected to the norovirus that has quickly spread throughout Illinois, but that the symptoms are similar to those caused by the virus.

St. Clair County investigates possible norovirus cases

BY KEVIN BERSETT - News-Democrat

The St. Clair County Health Department was investigating multiple suspected cases of norovirus Wednesday at an assisted living facility in Swansea, department spokeswoman Marilyn Vise said.

Tests were being conducted to confirm whether people who are experiencing the illness' symptoms at Sycamore Village Assisted Living, located at 225 Castellano Drive, had actually been infected with the infectious illness, Vise said. She was not sure how many cases were under investigation or when the results would be available.

Sycamore Hills employees declined to comment.

ROCKFORD ? A gastrointestinal illness resembling norovirus has been plaguing the Rock River Valley since late November, prompting local health officials to advise residents to increase hand washing and pay attention to food and water cleanliness.

Winnebago County Health Department Community Relations Manager Sue Fuller said gastroenteritis ? inflammation of the stomach and small and large intestines often called ?stomach flu? ? is not a reportable disease so there is no firm number of cases. Although she said the illness resembles norovirus, which is a reportable disease, it has not been specifically identified as such and the local cases are not considered an outbreak.
