CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago and Illinois public health officials have confirmed the first probable case of monkeypox in the state in an adult male Chicago resident who recently traveled to Europe.

An initial test at an IDPH laboratory yielded a positive orthopoxvirus result, and confirmatory testing is pending at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Public health officials are conducting contact tracing to identify individuals who may have had contact with the patient while was contagious.

"The case remains isolated and at this time there is no indication there is a great risk of extensive local spread of the virus, as monkeypox does not spread as easily as the COVID-19 virus," public health officials wrote in a statement Thursday...

Single Probable Case of Monkeypox Reported in DuPage County
DCHD Seal JPG Opens in new window

DuPage County - DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is investigating a single case of monkeypox virus infection in an adult male with international travel in the past month to a country which has also reported monkeypox cases recently. Initial testing was completed on June 10, 2022, at an Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Laboratory. Confirmatory testing is pending at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Based on initial epidemiologic characteristics and the positive orthopoxvirus result at IDPH, health officials consider this a probable monkeypox infection.

DCHD and IDPH are working closely with the CDC, the patient, and the patient’s health care providers to identify individuals with whom the patient may have been in contact while they were infectious. This contact tracing approach is appropriate given the nature and transmission of the virus, and to coordinate timely risk assessment and appropriate post-exposure response. At this time, DCHD has not identified any additional cases in the county. To protect patient confidentiality, no further details relating to the patient will be disclosed.

The case remains isolated and at this time there is no indication there is a great risk of extensive local spread of the virus, as monkeypox does not spread as easily as the COVID-19 virus. Person to person transmission is possible through close physical contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, items that have been contaminated with fluids or sores (clothing, bedding, etc.), or through respiratory droplets following prolonged face-to-face contact...

7 Chicago monkeypox cases involve those who recently traveled and conference attendee, officials say

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Public health officials have identified five new confirmed cases of monkeypox in Chicago residents, bringing the total to seven, according to a press release from the Chicago Dept. of Public Health.

CDPH said some of the recent cases involve individuals who recently traveled to Europe. One Chicago resident also reported attending the International Mr. Leather (IML) conference in Chicago from May 26 to30.

CDPH officials said residents from another state who were diagnosed with monkeypox also reported attending the same conference.

Chicago public health officials said they have contacted other public health departments around the country to request notification of any additional cases in people who visited Chicago from May 26 to 30.

CDPH said individuals attending festivals or other summer events should consider how much close, personal, skin-to-skin contact is likely to occur at the events they plan to attend...

Published 9 mins ago • Updated 3 mins ago

Health officials in Illinois have reported more suspected cases of monkeypox as U.S. cases continue to balloon, with two more cases believed to be detected in Chicago amid warnings in the city.

As of Thursday, the Illinois Department of Public Health said it had identified 10 total cases in the state - one in DuPage and nine in Chicago - though only eight have been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention so far. Health officials said they are working to identify anyone who may have been exposed in the latest cases.

The numbers mark a rise from the eight reported earlier this week as Chicago health officials issued warnings ahead of summer gatherings...

105 Cases of Monkeypox Confirmed in Chicago, Health Officials Announce
Kristen Thometz | July 11, 2022 4:31 pm

More than 100 cases of monkeypox have been confirmed in Chicago since the first probable case of the rare disease was discovered locally in early June, according to city health officials.

Chicago Department of Public Health officials announced Monday that 105 Chicagoans have been diagnosed with monkeypox, with the majority – but not all – cases occurring among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

CDPH Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said the spread appears to be through “tight-knit social networks,” but emphasized that anyone can spread the virus...

Monkeypox concern grows as virus spreads in Chicago: ‘They need to get loud about this’
Jake Sheridan, Chicago Tribune
Tue, July 19, 2022 at 11:07 AM·9 min read

CHICAGO — Chicago public health officials reported 173 monkeypox cases on Monday — up from 105 last week — and with vaccines scarce and hard to find, alarm is growing among doctors and those in the gay community that the city is not doing enough to address the spread.

Health officials are imploring the city to do more by increasing not only resources such as contact tracing, but also public awareness and education. Some in the gay community feel that the lack of public concern about the virus is because it’s mostly affecting men who have sex with other men, but health officials warn there is nothing to stop the virus from spreading to the entire population.

“It doesn’t care if you’re gay or not,” said Dr. Aniruddha Hazra, an infectious disease physician at LGBTQ-focused Howard Brown Health Center and the University of Chicago Medicine. “We have the tools to stop this from moving to other populations.”

Nine Chicagoans have been hospitalized because of the illness, Chicago Department of Public Health spokesperson Andrew Buchanan said Monday. The city has received over 5,400 doses of the vaccine and expects another 15,000 doses in coming days, he said. The federal government has ordered millions of doses...

With 202 monkeypox cases and not enough shots to go around, Chicago prioritizes vaccine
Until there is enough vaccine to meet the rising demand, Chicago has a plan to distribute the limited supply of monkeypox vaccine.

With 202 monkeypox cases already and a shortage of vaccine, Chicago public health officials on Friday sounded the alarm about the mounting crisis and urged those experiencing symptoms to get tested.

Chicago Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said the monkeypox victims are between the ages of 22 and 66, with nearly all of the confirmed cases being men who have had sex with other men. The majority of cases have been on the North Side, where Chicago’s gay population is concentrated.

So far, 30% of the patients diagnosed with monkeypox at the Howard Brown Health Center have been Hispanic and nearly 20% have been African American, said president and CEO David Ernesto Munar.

“Historically neglected communities will bear the brunt of this, as they have other outbreaks,” Munar said.

“We are concerned that we will continue to see disparities. We also know that we’re only reaching minority people who are likely experiencing symptoms being affected by this outbreak, because some people who are getting symptoms don’t recognize them and don’t come forward.”

Chicago has administered 5,400 doses of the monkeypox vaccine with 15,000 additional doses expected to arrive as early as this weekend...
