ILI High, Deaths Low in Many States

Here are a few examples where states show P&I deaths. When comparing P&I to last season (same time frame), AZ, KS, MO and UT show fewer deaths due to P&I, yet have higher ILI comparatively. FL shows no excess deaths, even though ILI is quite high. MN and GA (high ILI) have fewer P&I deaths in comparison to 2010-11 season for this time frame. According to information found by FluTracker Emily, Chicago, IL doctors are reporting fewer severe cases than during Pandemic year. Additionally, NYC (week 52) reports ED ILI discharge status of all patients is nearly 100% complete the day after their ED visit.

While ILI may be extremely high and flu widespread, the P&I deaths around the country are 7.3% for week 1, near epidemic threshold, not excessively above. All of this may change due to reporting, yet it appears that while ILI is high, deaths due to P&I (in many states) are at or below previous levels for this time frame.

According to CBS News:
California: Flu activity is on the rise in California, but the increase is not unexpected, state health officials said Friday.
North Dakota: Flu activity is earlier than usual but not abnormal
Oregon: Flu is widespread and increasing in Oregon but authorities say it's not outside the normal range.
Vermont Health Department officials say flu rates are higher than other years but the number of deaths does not appear out of the ordinary.
