CHAMPAIGN ? A 23-case mumps outbreak in Champaign-Urbana that began in April that could potentially grow, public health officials warn.

The cases largely involved vaccinated University of Illinois students or people they were in contact with, according to Awais Vaid, epidemiologist for the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

?They have all been vaccinated so the illness is not very severe, but they can still pass it on to others,? he said.

Vais said the expectation was that the cases would slow down when classes were out at the end of the spring semester, but that hasn?t been the case...

Champaign County has most of state's mumps cases

CHAMPAIGN ? The recent mumps outbreak in Champaign County has climbed to 50 cases, and local health officials say they wouldn't be surprised to see that number continue to inch upward.

Most of the mumps cases have been linked to the University of Illinois campus, where the majority of students are set to return in a few weeks for the start of the fall semester.

There have been smaller mumps outbreaks at the UI in years past, but this has been the largest in more than a decade, said Dr. Robert Palinkas, director of the UI McKinley Health Center.

"We're hoping it will tail off," he said. "It always has, but you can't necessarily be certain about that."

Champaign County now has two-thirds of the state's 73 mumps cases, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The other 23 are scattered among nine other counties. There have been 14 mumps cases in eight of the counties, and the Cook County and Chicago departments of public health have together reported nine cases, according to the state's latest count...

Officials at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana are advising students to get MMR booster shots to address an outbreak of the mumps at the university. Officials from the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Champaign-Urbana Health District and the McKinley Health Center say students should get the booster even if they have one or two previous MMR vaccinations.

Students are also being urged to keep their distance from each other...

As of Aug. 28, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) had 104 confirmed cases of mumps already in 2015, an illness that most children are vaccinated for before attending kindergarten.

The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is generally given in two doses: the first when a child is between 12 and 15 months old and the second between 4 and 6 years old.

In an effort to contain the outbreak, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and McKinley Health Center at UIUC are recommending a third dose of the vaccine called the 317 funded vaccine. The 317/Vaccines for Adults program was created to help county health departments vaccinate underinsured or even uninsured adults. The vaccine is also approved to be used to respond to outbreaks...

CHARLESTON - Eastern Illinois University Health Service officials say a small number of students have been diagnosed with mumps between September 8 and September 11.

EIU Medical Director Sheila Baker, MD, says all reported cases have been evaluated and managed with local and state health departments. Baker also says students who have been diagnosed are being asked to self-isolate during the contagious period, meaning those students will not be able to attend class, and could be asked to return home to recuperate...

Heartland declares mumps outbreak

4 mumps cases have been confirmed at Heartland Community College in Normal. An outbreak has been declared at the college.

A fourth confirmed mumps case found at Heartland Community College, with three cases being linked, has prompted the Illinois Department of Public Health to declare an outbreak at the college.

As of Sept. 16, test results conducted by the health department have confirmed 16 positive mumps cases in McLean County with additional tests currently pending. The health department is in the process of investigating the cases and working with local medical providers and colleges throughout the county...

CHAMPAIGN ? The University of Illinois-centered mumps outbreak has continued to grow, despite a pricey vaccination campaign expected to cost well over $250,000.

"I would very much like to think the 10,000 vaccinations we've given, the third shot, has slowed it down, not just here, but other parts of the state as well," said Julie Pryde, administrator of the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.

The outbreak has continued to add new cases by the day, "and it appears to be rather steady," Pryde said. There were 133 mumps cases connected with the local campus and broader community outbreak, and 186 cases in all statewide Wednesday, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

As of Aug. 26, the UI outbreak total was 101 cases...

BLOOMINGTON ? The McLean County Health Department on Friday added two Twin City high schools and Illinois State University to the list of sites with increased mumps activity.

Normal Community West High School, University High School and ISU each have three or more confirmed cases of mumps linked to their campuses. At each school, letters are being sent to students, faculty, and staff who have been identified as close contacts to the students with mumps.
