Pandemic flu prep needed now: experts

Pandemic flu preparedness efforts are falling dangerously behind advances in science and technology, experts say.

A report released at the the Infectious Diseases Society of America conference in Toronto outlines actions that should be taken now to better prepare for a pandemic flu outbreak.

?(Governments) must expand and accelerate research efforts and ensure we rapidly translate scientific breakthroughs into real-world practice to prepare for a possible pandemic,? says Dr. Kathleen Maletic Neuzil, Chairman of the of IDSA?s Pandemic Influenza Task Force, and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine.

?This is particularly important in the area of flu vaccine production and delivery, which will always be the best defense against pandemic flu.?

The report recommends developing a pandemic vaccine research and development master plan to systemize and greatly enhance the current international vaccine research and development strategies, bringing together the knowledge of government and private industry scientists.
