H5N1 Outbreak Expands in Dairy Herds

Excerpt:

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed six additional cases of H5N1 avian flu in dairy cattle, all from Idaho. This raises the national total to 1,031 detections across 17 states since March 2024.

Idaho continues to be the nation’s most affected area. The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) reports 25 quarantined dairy facilities across Gooding, Jerome, and Twin Falls counties. Idaho's dairy sector is the state's largest agricultural industry, and it is the third-biggest dairy producer in the country. ISDA notes the state is home to about 350 family-owned dairy farms.

Bird flu hits Washington egg layer facility with 2 million birds

In Idaho, detections impacted 230 birds in Madison County, 200 birds in Gem County, and 160 birds in Latah County. All were in backyard flocks.

Dr. Scott Leibsle, state veterinarian of Idaho, said the state also had a preliminary confirmation in a dairy herd.

Leibsle said the strain of the virus that impacts dairy herds isn’t being maintained in wild waterfowl.

There also weren’t significant signs of ongoing spread from one dairy farm to another. Idaho had a rash of detections at dairy farms in the spring, but this is the first case in months.

“We’ve already been through this once and there has already been some low-level immunity that has been established by the Idaho dairy herd,” Leibsle said.

New cattle brought into the area may not possess that immunity, however.

Bird flu found in more Idaho dairy herds

Monthly routine surveillance found bird flu in five Idaho dairies not previously identified as having the disease, state veterinarian Scott Leibsle said.

The five Idaho cases, confirmed April 13, are the first this year, according to USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Total U.S. cases in cattle — 1,093 — include 917 in 2024 and 171 in 2025 along with the five so far this year.

Idaho now has 17 dairies across five counties under quarantine for bird flu as identified in bulk tank testing, said Leibsle, who is with the Idaho State Department of Agriculture. Statewide surveillance began in March 2025.

“We hadn’t seen this many dairies under quarantine for months,” he said. The cause of the recent increase is not known but may be weather-related.

“The strain of virus we are seeing in dairy cattle in Idaho is not being spread by migratory birds. That has been the case from the beginning,” Leibsle said. “Dairy cattle are giving it to other dairy cattle.”

Most Idaho dairy cattle identified as having bird flu are asymptomatic, he said. “The cattle are otherwise healthy and at a high level of production.”
