Thorolfur Gudnason, the epidemiologist, says it is gratifying to see that the infection with the coronary virus has decreased today since yesterday. However, it cannot be read from the conclusion that the peak of the epidemic has been reached.

"You wonder if this is a significant reduction, but I think it's too early to say that. The next few days will determine whether or not we have reached the top. It would be as good as it was, "Thorolf said at today's public defense meeting.

A total of 99 who recovered from COVID-19 yesterday

A total of 24 new cases of the coronary virus were identified, causing the disease COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, with an estimated 1,586 infections. Fewer infections have not been detected in a single day since March 22 when 22 infections were detected.

"About 5 percent of the population is quarantined or has been quarantined, which is a pretty incredible proportion. Work is currently underway on the implementation of a ban on assembly after the current ban ends on May 4 and the reception of tourists to the country over the next few weeks. We will announce the next steps after Easter, "says the Chief Epidemiologist.

Eighth death due to COVID-19 in this country

A total of 510 samples were taken yesterday; 268 at the Department of Biological and Viral Sciences and 242 at the Icelandic Genetic Analysis. The last few days before have generally taken well over a thousand samples each day.

It is noteworthy that as many people have now recovered and are in isolation with COVID-19, or 841 in each group. This is the fifth consecutive day that the number of active infections is decreasing, but most were on April 5, or 1,096.

40 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 and 11 in intensive care.

CORONAVIRUS may be a lot less deadly than was first thought as large-scale screening in Iceland suggested around half of those infected have had the disease without even realising.

Iceland has tested one tenth of its population at random, and data from the study suggests most display people only mild, if any, symptoms of the disease.

There have only been seven deaths in the European nation and 1,689 cases of infection recorded since the outbreak began.

A nation-wide rigorous testing campaign has seen 10 per cent of Iceland's 364,134 population swabbed.

Nearly half of Iceland's tests have been conducted by biopharmaceutical company deCODE Genetics.

The company has focused its testing on the the wider population and not necessarily those who are high-risk or displaying symptoms.

The crucial difference means that deCODE's screening program "accepts everybody who is not showing symptoms and not currently in quarantine," Iceland's Directorate of Health said in a statement.

The government department added: "Testing in the general population will continue to elicit a much clearer picture of the actual spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Iceland."

The picture emerging seems to indicate that if a wider cohort of the population is tested, more accurate data can be obtained as to how deadly the virus really is.

Data suggests the country's fatality rate is just 0.0041 per cent, which is significantly lower than other countries, including the UK which officially records a fatality rate of around 0.12 per cent.

The curve goes down: "Reason to rejoice"
Ten people were identified with COVID-19 in the past 24 hours in this country.

Thorolfur Gudnason the Epidemiologist safely states that the coronary epidemic is descending in Iceland. According to figures from the Icelandic genetic analysis, there is little to no social transmission, about 0.1 - 0.2 percent.

At a public safety briefing, it was revealed that 10 people had been diagnosed with COVID-19 disease the past 24 hours. Of these, five were analyzed in the capital area, four in the Westfjords and one in the Su?urnes region. Nobody died last day of COVID-19.

"It is amazing to see what everyone has done together and performed well, and that is especially worthy of thanks," Thorolf said at a public information conference today.
An occasion to rejoice

Thorolf says that it has now been revealed that Iceland has the third lowest number of all European nations infected by head count.

"If we also look at the number of deaths in this country compared to other countries, but unfortunately we have lost eight people from this disease in this country, then it turns out that we are much lower, many times lower than most other European countries and although others were sought, ”Thorolf said, pointing out that of the Nordic countries, only Finns are lower than Iceland, but we are in a similar place to Norwegians.

"This may just be a reason to rejoice only in the results we have achieved, but there is perhaps no special reason to breastfeed right now because there is still a long way to go."

REYKJAVIK (AFP) - Iceland said on Tuesday (April 14) it would begin next month to gradually relax restrictions imposed as part of efforts to fight the new coronavirus.

The country, which has 1,720 confirmed infections of Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, and eight deaths, imposed a series of restrictions beginning in mid-March.

High schools and universities, as well as hair salons and museums, will reopen on May 4.

Six new infections of the crown virus have been identified over the past 24 hours. Four were identified at the Landsp?tali Department of Virology but two at the Icelandic Genetic Analysis. More samples were taken than the day before, 1,263 for the Icelandic genetic analysis, but 292 for the Faculty of Virology.
No fewer infections have been detected in a single day since March 8, five infections have been identified. However, the number is consistent with the last days, but in recent days there have been 7-15 diagnoses every day. Thorolfur Gudnason Epidemiologist pointed out at a press conference yesterday that the fluctuations between days would be normal due to differences in screening.
A total of 1,760 infections of the crown virus have now been detected. The vast majority, 1,291, have recovered, but active infection is 460. Nine have been killed in this country due to the virus.
