The husband of the Spanish nurse who has been diagnosed with Ebola has been told by authorities that the dog must euthanized without any testing to determine if it is even a carrier.

I know that they can be asymptomatic carriers but don't know if that means they would carry the virus for life or not and might therefore be able to infect humans. If anyone here can offer a better understanding of the issue to me I would be most appreciative.

I found this article but can't claim to fully understand its implications.

Ebola Unburied: Does Improper Burial of Ebola Victims Leave Communities at Risk of Exposure Through Dogs?

The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has taken a gruesome turn as we learn of dogs digging into fresh, shallow graves to partake in an Ebola feast. But what does this mean for those in the community and what does it mean for the dogs? This story actually didn't surprise me. In the 2001-2002 Gabon Ebola outbreaks, when dogs were tested, a whopping 30% were seropositive for Ebola. Let me take a minute to explain exactly what that means.

"Seropositive" means the dogs had antibodies against Ebola in their blood. Antibodies are proteins made by effector B cells, (plasma cells). B cells are white blood cells that develop into effector B cells/plasma cells when needed to make antibodies. Antibodies recognize a part of a foreign body like a virus, and target it for destruction. This part they recognize is the "antigen" or "antibody generator" and it provokes an adaptive immune response, AKA the antibody response. Antibodies can be made to order, in response to specific antigens, therefore their role in immunity is considered "adaptive".

OK, so when there is Ebola in your blood it is recognized as foreign and antibodies are generated to get rid of it. Blood tests can be done to detect either the Ebola antigen, or antibodies against Ebola. When antigen is detected, it means there are virus particles in the blood. When antibodies are detected it means the virus had been there and an immune response was mounted. When an antibody encounters it's antigen, it will bind to it, making both undetectable to the blood tests. Early in an infection the number of antigen molecules will be greater than the number of antibody molecules, so all the antibodies will be bound to antigen and there will be excess unbound antigen. This excess unbound antigen will be detectable by blood tests and it will indicate that there is virus in the blood. As the fight rages on, there will come a point, hopefully, where there are more antibodies in the blood than antigen, and the reverse will happen: all the antigen will be bound to antibodies and there will be excess antibodies in the blood. At this point the antibodies will be detectable. This point is called "seroconversion" and the blood test will indicate that there are antibodies and therefore be "seropositive". At the early stage of seroconversion, when the amount of antibody and antigen are nearly the same, it's possible that there won't be enough of either unbound, for detection. This can lead to false negative blood tests. This period is called the "window period".

OK. So now we know that there were dogs that were seropositive during the Gabon outbreak, so they had Ebola antibodies in their blood and thus had had Ebola virus in their blood. In other words, the dogs had been infected and lived. In fact there was no evidence that the dogs showed any symptoms. Considering that the likelihood of a dog feasting on a non-human primate that had died of Ebola in the forest is pretty good, it's not surprising that they would have antibodies in their blood. It's important to note that in this study, they were not able to detect viral antigen in the blood and they were not able to isolate virus from the blood. This suggests that the dogs were infected and fought the infection without symptoms and without acting as an amplifying host. An amplifying host is an animal in which an infectious agent can reproduce to high numbers. Without a lot of virus in its system, a dog wouldn't be able to transmit Ebola.

So what does it mean for the people and dogs in this community in which the dogs are digging up shallow corpses? Well, first and foremost it means the people in the community have to live through a horrific nightmare as their loved ones are unburied and the fear of exposure increases as someone has to handle the bodies and properly rebury them. But does it mean the dogs can infect people? Well, based on the information we have, I don't think it's likely that dogs are reservoir hosts. However, It would depend on many factors like how much virus is in the blood and bodily fluids of the dog before it seroconverts. And certainly, if there is fresh bodily fluid or tissue on a dogs muzzle or paw it could infect someone it touches. Now how long that would remain a genuine threat, I don't know. Again it would depend on factors such as whether or not the dogs muzzle/paw was washed off in puddles or streams etc. Because it's a relatively unknown factor in transmission, and because it's not worth the risk in an epidemic already out of control, while sad, I think putting down the dogs is a wise move.

Here's hoping they will have the wisdom and the manpower to bury the deceased properly from now on.

Presumably, the Spanish nurse's dog hasn't been digging up corpses. So it is probably not going to be infectious from blood or tissues on its paws or mouth. Sadly, that probably isn't going to keep tne dog from being killed.

People feel very close to their dogs and cats. Some people lost their lives in Hurricane Katrina because they stayed with their pets. Many evacuation centers made it known they would not take them. As a result, I believe most evacuation centers will now take pets (in the US).

I think a reasonable compromise is to quarantine the dog safely at a veterinary clinic until a thoughtful process can be had.

If the government is known to grab the pets of confirmed ebola patients then people will be more reluctant to report their illness. They may even ship the animals away before they can tested.

I hope that science community, WHO and the CDC get it together and come up with a more enlightened, compassionate approach to unknowns and clearly get that message to the public, including local public health officials.

Sharon is right. This story will spread like wildfire through the pet loving community. (After all, what do we know about about the possibilities of any animal spreading Ebola?)

Summary
During the approximately 18?32 thousand years of domestication [ 1 ], dogs and humans have shared a similar social environment [ 2 ]. Dog and human vocalizations are thus familiar and relevant to both species [ 3 ], although they belong to evolutionarily distant taxa, as their lineages split approximately 90?100 million years ago [ 4 ]. In this first comparative neuroimaging study of a nonprimate and a primate species, we made use of this special combination of shared environment and evolutionary distance. We presented dogs and humans with the same set of vocal and nonvocal stimuli to search for functionally analogous voice-sensitive cortical regions.

We demonstrate that voice areas exist in dogs and that they show a similar pattern to anterior temporal voice areas in humans.

Our findings also reveal that sensitivity to vocal emotional valence cues engages similarly located nonprimary auditory regions in dogs and humans. Although parallel evolution cannot be excluded, our findings suggest that voice areas may have a more ancient evolutionary origin than previously known.

Exactly what I was thinking about, but then I thought why would the waste of a contact animal be any more toxic than a human contact? How do they handle quarantined human waste when there are no signs of infection?

When you treat a dog for cancer with chemo drugs, you are told to keep people other pets away from waste for awhile. Also the same when cats are treated with radiation for thyroid problems. (Special handling for litter is needed.)

So even if an abundance of caution is used with a healthy animal, the waste risk is easily managed.

I completely agree. I would be as likely to let someone take my hound as I would my child.

Thank you, everyone for your help with this. Animal control just called and they have an 11 year old black lab whos owner died and the family was not willing to keep her, so it looks like I've got another new old dog. Just took in one a couple of weeks ago. This one will bring me back up to 4 dogs, thankfully they are all old and easy keepers.

Ebola virus antibody prevalence in dogs and human risk.

During the 2001-2002 outbreak in Gabon, we observed that several dogs were highly exposed to Ebola virus by eating infected dead animals. To examine whether these animals became infected with Ebola virus, we sampled 439 dogs and screened them by Ebola virus-specific immunoglobulin (Ig) G assay, antigen detection, and viral polymerase chain reaction amplification. Seven (8.9%) of 79 samples from the 2 main towns, 15 (15.2%) of 99 samples from Mekambo, and 40 (25.2%) of 159 samples from villages in the Ebola virus-epidemic area had detectable Ebola virus-IgG, compared to only 2 (2%) of 102 samples from France. Among dogs from villages with both infected animal carcasses and human cases, seroprevalence was 31.8%. A significant positive direct association existed between seroprevalence and the distances to the Ebola virus-epidemic area. This study suggests that dogs can be infected by Ebola virus and that the putative infection is asymptomatic.

But also simple antigenic stimulation as you would get from a killed vaccine was postulated in the body of the paper.

No circulating Ebola antigens or viral DNA sequences (tested for by PCR) were detected in either positive or negative serum specimens, and attempts to isolate virus from these samples failed. These findings indicate either old, transient Ebola infection of the tested dogs, or antigenic stimulation.

That would be exposure to viral particles, not an infective viron. Perhaps the high acid of a dog's stomach quickly destroys live viruses, or ebola virus is so unstable in the environment that most natural exposures are to antigens, rather than infective viruses.

Gavin Macgregor-Skinner, (involved in successful ebola containment in Nigeria), said persistence of ebola is estimated to range from minutes to hours depending on surfaces.

Maybe if PathogenPhD knew that, she would not have "sadly" recommended slaughtering dogs in the outbreak areas in Liberia in such a general and dangerous way.

There is no evidence I'm aware of that killing the ebola patient's pets will help in any way. I don't think there is any evidence that ebola is communicable between humans and canines. And most people are not in the habit of allowing their pets to dig up and eat the remains of disease victims.

Maybe the dogs can also acquire ebola by being in contact with hand sweat deposited on the food & water bowls. My dog will sometimes lick my clothing as if he's trying to "clean" a spot of something that I can't even see. Many dogs also put their leash in their mouth as a form of begging for a walk - often contacting the handle. Then there are the people who let their dogs "kiss" them on the lips!

Mouth secretions and hand sweat may be a larger transmission mode than is being portrayed.

Not only is it unfair to be infected with Ebola by the sanitary assistant due to the lack of necessary means, they must also lose their dog as a result of an thoughtless decision, as it would be much easier to isolate or quarantine the dog just as they have the victim?s husband. If this woman were to die, the dog which has accompanied them for so many years would be an important emotional support for her husband. This is not "just" a dog, for this couple he is one of the family.
