Hungary deploys military to contain foot-and-mouth outbreak

Hungary has deployed soldiers and launched new disinfection measures to help contain an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in a northwestern area bordering Slovakia and Austria, the agriculture minister said on Wednesday.

Hungary reported its first case in more than 50 years of the disease, which often leads to trade restrictions, on a cattle farm early last month.

Since then, neighbouring Slovakia has detected outbreaks at five locations after reporting its first cases in March. It has also stepped up measures to contain the disease’s spread.

Hungarian Agriculture Minister Istvan Nagy said foot-and-mouth disease was found at two additional farms in Gyor-Moson-Sopron county by Wednesday morning, affecting 3,500 cattle in total.

“We are making every effort to prevent any additional outbreaks,” Nagy said in a Facebook video...

Hungary suspects possible 'biological attack' linked to FMD outbreak in over 50 years
Foot-and-mouth livestock disease outbreak prompts border closures and mass slaughter of cattle in northwest

BUDAPEST: Hungary on Thursday suggested a "biological attack" as possible source of first foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in country in more than half a century, triggering border closures and mass slaughter of cattle in the northwest.

Hungary reported a first case of foot-and-mouth disease in over 50 years on a cattle farm in the northwest near the border with Austria and Slovakia last month, the World Organisation for Animal Health said, citing Hungarian authorities.

Thousands of cattle had to be culled as the landlocked country tries to contain the outbreak, while Austria and Slovakia have closed dozens of border crossings, after the disease also appeared in the southern part of Slovakia.

"At this stage, we can say that it cannot be ruled out that the virus was not of natural origin, we may be dealing with an artificially engineered virus," Prime Minister Viktor Orban's chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas told a media briefing.

Responding to a question, Gulyas said he could not rule out that the virus outbreak was the result of a biological attack, without giving information on who might be responsible.

He also said that suspicion was based on verbal information received from a foreign laboratory and that their findings have not yet been fully proven and documented...

New foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in Hungary: thousands of cattle to be culled by tonight

A farm in Rábapordány in northwest Hungary infected by foot-and-mouth disease will be eliminated in a matter of hours, the minister of agriculture said on Saturday, adding that all farmers must cooperate in a disciplined manner to stop the virus.

István Nagy said the authorities had already slaughtered 875 cattle. While the pigs held in the farm were not infected, it was unavoidable that the pig stock should also be liquidated because of their proximity to the cattle, he added. The majority of this work will be completed by the evening, and the corpses buried by Sunday, he added.

Nagy said the pigs could turn into a “virus factory” if the infection spreads to them, so “we have no other possibility, no matter how painful it is, we must bury them as soon as possible so that we can save the other animals.”..
