Hundreds afflicted by Malaria in Chin state

18 August 2007 - The recent outbreak of Malaria in Chin state, northwest Myanmar has affected hundreds of people, a source said.
The Malaria outbreak was noticed in July in Dawn and Ralpel villages, 30 miles from Thantlang town, where 70 people from Dawn and 50 from Ralpel village were suffering from Malaria.
"The condition was very bad. The patients just consumed capsules to treat Malaria as the hospital is very far from their village," a source in Chin state said.
Six persons were said to have been taken to Thantlang hospital in the first week of this month as they were in a serious condition.
The local medics were busy treating the patients as Malaria was rampant in other areas of Thantlang Township.
Mr. Unity from Community Health Care Program based on the Indo-Burma border said, "Malaria occurs mainly in the rainy season in remote areas".
There are 180 households in Dawn village and 80 in Ralpel village. Almost every household in these villages have malaria patients, Mr.Unity added.
