? NHS Lanarkshire today (24 July 2012) issued a public health alert following the confirmation of a case of anthrax in a Lanarkshire injecting drug user. The patient is in hospital and is in a critical but stable condition.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said it was an isolated case in the city and police are now investigating. The death was confirmed by the health board's public health protection unit (PHPU).
Public health consultant Dr Syed Ahmed said: "This is an isolated case in Glasgow and there have been other sporadic cases in the UK and Europe in recent months. We are working with other services and colleagues to be on the lookout for any other possible cases, especially amongst other injecting drug users.?

Dr Ahmed added: ?Drug injecting is extremely risky and dangerous. I urge all drug injecting heroin users to be extremely alert and to seek urgent medical advice if they experience an infection at the site of injection.?
While injecting drug users need to be on their guard, the risk to the rest of the population is negligible. It is extremely rare for anthrax to be spread from person to person and there is no significant risk of airborne transmission from one person to another.?
There is an ongoing outbreak of anthrax among people who inject drugs in a number of countries in Europe with a number of cases now identified since early June 2012.
The Glasgow case is the second case in Scotland since July 2012 among people who use drugs and brings the total number of UK cases to eight (two in Scotland, five in England and one in Wales).
The Report of the National Anthrax Outbreak Control Team (NAOCT) into the deadly 2009/10 outbreak of anthrax among injecting drug users in Scotland warned that contaminated heroin could be imported into Britain again at any time and cause another outbreak of anthrax or similar.
