Re: How Dangerous is Bird Flu (H5N1) to Global Public Health?
Another H5N1 Case in Egypt reported by the media - Lack of offcial transparency?
Yesterday another woman was reported in the media as a suspected bird flu victim in Gharbia governorate (link). But little official information on current H5N1 infections is available in Egypt. As noted by Ironorehopper in another thread (link):
Comment - The fact that the Egypt Ministry of Health is no longer posting official information is disturbing. This lack of information is coming right at the time as infections and deaths from H5N1 are increasing in Egypt. This lack of transparency is cause for concern. One can speculate that perhaps there is concern in Egypt that with increasing H5N1 cases, Egypt might surpass Indonesia as the country with the most H5N1 infections. Of course, there is every reason to believe that several years ago public health officials in Indonesia made the decision to downplay or even obscure the rate of human H5N1 infections in Indonesia. Now it seems that Egypt is following in the same path.

With the exception of media outlets, no official reports about human avian influenza cases (H5N1) are available for the public and accessible through internet, as the Ministry of Health of Egypt removed Media Reports page as well as any link to tables, figures and other tool useful to track the evolution of H5N1 in humans in the country.
It is really advisable that the tools will be put online as soon as possible to improve knowledge and confidence among the public and concerned people.
