Hospitals in Guatemala City exceed their capacity to care for COVID-19

Guatemala, Jul 15 (EFE) .- The main hospitals in Guatemala City are "overwhelmed" with patients with COVID-19, but they have not stopped attending other emergencies despite the coronavirus, as confirmed on Wednesday by the hospital directors. .
"For COVID-19 patients we have 200 beds, which have already been exceeded. Besides, we have our non-COVID-19 population," said the director of the San Juan de Dios hospital, Jorge Solares, during a summons in the Guatemalan Congress.
"The situation is complicated, but we have been trying to resolve it," added Solares.
Guatemala has recorded to date 30,872 coronavirus cases, including 1,302 deaths, the highest number of deaths in Central America, according to official data.
For his part, Marco Barrientos, director of the other largest hospital in Guatemala City and the country, the Roosevelt, explained before the Legislative Body summons that the hospital "is full."
The directors agreed that the two hospitals continue to receive other emergencies and illnesses despite the situation they are experiencing with COVID-19.
"There is a curfew, everything should be calmer. But it is incredible the number of patients who arrive (at the hospital) with multiple injuries," said Barrientos.
The San Juan de Dios hospital has approximately 200 beds to serve COVID-19 patients while the Roosevelt has a capacity of 250 beds, both directors reported.
Guatemala is under curfew from six in the afternoon to five in the morning and mobility restrictions for the nine departments with the most cases.
THE TWO SPECIALIZED HOSPITALS
The director of the Parque de la Industria campaign hospital, Dania Hern?ndez, explained that in addition to being saturated with patients, they also suffer from "lack of human resources."
Hern?ndez explained that the hospital, built in March in a convention hall by COVID-19, has a capacity for 300 patients of moderate to severe condition and that there are currently around 290. "We have had 173 deaths," Hern?ndez said.
