ROME ? A patient in Tuscany has been diagnosed as having swine flu, a hospital official said Saturday ? announcing the first confirmed swine flu case in Italy.

Massa Carrara hospital health director Giuliano Biselli said the man was recovering well, but would be hospitalized for a few more days as a precaution.

Biselli told The Associated Press by telephone that the National Health Institute laboratory in Rome confirmed the case.

Health and Welfare Minister Maurizio Sacconi planned to hold a news conference later Saturday to talk "about the latest laboratory analyses," his ministry said.

The ANSA news agency, quoting from a statement from Massa Carrara's public health office, said the 50-year-old man and his wife had returned to Milan's Malpensa airport April 24 on a British airline flight from Mexico, after spending several months in Mexico City.

It quoted the statement as saying as saying that anti-viral medication has been given as a precaution to the man's wife and other relatives, and authorities were now checking other passengers on their flight. It did not give the exact airline name or flight number. - AP
