Thursday, June 05, 2008.
Mongolia observed a day of mourning on Saturday (May 31) for the 52 people killed in a heavy snowstorm that devastated seven provinces last week.
The storm hit the Tov, Gobisumber, Dornogobi, Dundgobi, Khentii, Dornod and Sukhbaatar aimags suddenly on May 26-27, leaving hundreds of gers destroyed and thousands of livestock dead in its wake.
Flags were lowered to half-mast and all entertainment events were stopped on Saturday.
Of the 52 people killed during the storm, 14 were children, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
?During the storm, a total of 254 people went missing. After the immediate rescue operation, 202 people were found alive and 52 people were found frozen to death, 14 of them were children,? a NEMA press official said.
The worst-hit provinces were Khentii and Sukhbaatar where an estimated 200,000 livestock died and around 150 gers were completely destroyed.
N.Orosdagva, a herder from Khentii aimag?s Berkh village, lost his wife, daughter and granddaughter in the storm.
?Unbelievable. Three members of our family have lost their lives - it just seems so unfair,? Orosdagva said.
Seven people from his small village died in the storm.
The winds reached speeds of 30-40 meters per second, damaging buildings and infrastructure and causing power cuts in the worst-hit areas, especially Sukhbaatar aimag. Around 500 electricity and telecommunication poles were destroyed.
Local authorities are disinfecting and burying dead animals to prevent the outbreak of a veterinarian disease, NEMA said.
The Government decided on May 29 to render assistance to the Khentii, Sukhbaatar, Dornod, and Tov aimags. As part of emergency response efforts, 163 gers, 40 metric tons of flour, 25 metric tons of rice, three tons of sugar, 1,000 vegetable oil, and 50 tons of fodder were transported.
