Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Caritas Medical Centre

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) made the following announcement today (November 17):
An 89-year-old male patient was admitted to a medical ward at CMC on November 5 for pneumonia. His stool and blood culture samples were confirmed to have Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) infection on November 16. The patient is being treated under isolation and his clinical condition is stable.
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened inpatients who were in close contact with the index patient in the same period. So far three male inpatients (aged 69 to 77) were confirmed to be VRE carriers. They are now under medical surveillance and isolation. The hospital will continue the screening process.
The hospital has stepped up infection control measures in the ward according to established guidelines. The relevant ward environment and equipment were also disinfected.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.

Update on Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Caritas Medical Centre

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
Regarding the announcement yesterday that a number of inpatients were found to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, a spokesperson for Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) made the following update today (November 18):
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts has been performed. Another four male patients (aged 81-91) were confirmed as carriers of VRE today. Their clinical condition is stable and they are under medical surveillance and isolation.
The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures in the wards concerned and the situation will be closely monitored.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.

Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in medical ward in Caritas Medical Centre

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson of Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) made the following announcement today (December 1):
A 61-year-old male patient was admitted to the medical ward in CMC on November 20 for treatment of biliary sepsis. His bile culture sample was detected to have Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) and Pseudomonas Aerugenosa on November 30.
The patient is being treated under isolation and his clinical condition is stable.
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened the patients who stayed in the same cubicle with the index patient in the same period. It was found two more male inpatients (both aged 78) to be VRE carriers. They are under medical surveillance and isolation.
The hospital will continue the screening process for other concerned patients.
There are clinical guidelines in public hospitals to ensure proper use of antibiotics, including Vancomycin and management of VRE carriers.
CMC has stepped up infection control measures according to established guidelines.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
