Swine and Seasonal Flu Monitor is a weekly report produced by the Respiratory Disease Office of the Centre for Health Protection. It summarizes and monitors the weekly situation of HSI and seasonal influenza in Hong Kong.


Local situation on Human Swine Influenza (Pandemic influenza H1N1(2009)) (as of Jan 27, 2010)

• The activity of human swine influenza (HSI) remains at similar level compared to the previous week as reflected by the number of attendances at designated flu clinics for influenza-like illness (ILI) (Fig 1) and the consultation rates for ILI at general practitioners? clinics (Fig 3). Currently about 26% of patients attending Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) for ILI symptoms were tested positive for HSI (Fig 2).
• As of Jan 27, 2010, 87 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
• The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 4 (Jan 17 to 23, 2010) was 6. As of Jan 27, 2010, a total of 242 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 148 males and 94 females with ages ranged from 10 months to 95 years (median: 51 years).
• In week 4 (Jan 17 to 23, 2010), 4 fatal cases were recorded. As of Jan 27, 2010, a total of 64 fatal cases were recorded. They were 44 males and 20 females, age ranged from 11 to 95 years (median: 56 years).

Local situation on seasonal influenza (as of Jan 27, 2010)

• The seasonal influenza activity is low. In week 4 (Jan 17 to 23, 2010), 0%, 0% and 10.1% of all circulating viruses were H1, H3 and B respectively (Fig 4).

Local situation on Human Swine Influenza (Pandemic influenza H1N1(2009)) - (as of Feb 3, 2010)

• The activity of human swine influenza (HSI) remains at low level as reflected by the number of attendances at designated flu clinics for influenza-like illness (ILI) (Fig 1) and the consultation rates for ILI at general practitioners? clinics (Fig 3). Currently about 21% of patients attending Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) for ILI symptoms were tested positive for HSI (Fig 2)
• As of Feb 3, 2010, 68 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
• The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 5 (Jan 24 to 30, 2010) was 4. As of Feb 3, 2010, a total of 245 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 150 males and 95 females with ages ranged from 30days to 95 years (median: 51 years).
• In week 5 (Jan 24 to 30, 2010), 2 fatal cases were recorded. As of Feb 3, 2010, a total of 65 fatal cases were recorded. They were 44 males and 21 females, age ranged from 11 to 95 years (median: 56 years).

• The HSI activity in the community has slightly increased when compared to the previous week. It is still at a relatively low level and more observations over the next few weeks are needed to determine if there is a sustained rising trend. Currently about 9.5% of patients attending Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) for ILI symptoms were tested positive for HSI (Fig 2).
• As of Mar 10, 2010, 49 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.
• The weekly number of severe cases recorded in week 10 (Feb 28 to Mar 6, 2010) was 8. As of Mar 10, 2010, a total of 260 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 160 males and 100 females with ages ranged from 30 days to 95 years (median: 51 years).
• In week 10 (Feb 28 to Mar 6, 2010), no fatal cases were recorded. As of Mar 10, 2010, a total of 73 fatal cases were recorded. They were 52 males and 21 females, age ranged from 1 to 95 years (median: 55 years).

As of Apr 21, 2010, 28 patients with HSI infection remained in public hospitals.

The number of severe cases recorded in week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010) was 1. As of Apr 21, 2010, a total of 277 severe cases were recorded. These severe cases included 170 males and 107 females with ages ranged from 30 days to 95 years (median: 52 years).

In week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010), two fatal cases were recorded. As of Apr 21, 2010, a total of 80 fatal cases were recorded. They were 56 males and 24 females, age ranged from 1 to 95 years (median: 56 years).

Influenza detection was 143 in week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010). Laboratory surveillance detected 34 human swine influenza viruses, 1 influenza A (H3) virus, 3 untyped influenza A viruses and 105 influenza B viruses.

In week 16 (Apr 11 to 17, 2010), 3 influenza-like illness (ILI) outbreaks were recorded. In the first 4 days of week 17, 2010 (as of Apr 21), there were 10 ILI outbreaks received.

No. of influenza isolates detected by Public Health Laboratory Centre had increased from 73 in week 28 to 98 in week 29.
