Hong Kong: Serious flu complications prompt repeated call for vigilance (9/07/10)

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health today (September 7) repeated its call for vigilance against flu as report about a three-year-old boy suffering from Influenza with serious complications was received.

The boy developed cough on August 28 and fever on September 4. He consulted a general practitioner on September 5 and 6. He was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital on September 6. He later developed septic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation. He is now in the intensive care unit in critical condition.

His nasopharyngeal aspirate specimen tested positive for Influenza A.

The boy had good past health and no history of travel.

Three of his home contacts have recently developed upper respiratory symptoms. They are now in stable condition. CHP's investigation continues.

The spokesman reminded members of the public to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures against influenza.

They are advised to maintain good personal as well as environmental hygiene and build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise, and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking.

A three-year-old boy who came down with flu was in critical condition in hospital last night.

His is the first flu complication reported by the Centre for Health Protection during the summer peak flu season.

The toddler, who developed septic shock and blood clotting problems, is in the intensive care unit at Tuen Mun Hospital, the center said.

He has had good past health and has not traveled. The boy developed a cough on August 28 and fever on Saturday.

The center said the boy tested positive for influenza A. Investigations into the case are ongoing.

Three of his family members, who recently developed upper respiratory symptoms, are now in a stable condition, the center said.

Overall flu activity in Hong Kong, including seasonal flu and human swine flu (H1N1), remains at a high level, according to the latest surveillance data up to August 28.

There was one severe swine flu case recorded in the week of August 22-28.

The authorities advise the public to maintain good personal and environmental hygiene and build up the immune system with a good diet, regular exercise and adequate rest.
