The new cases involve 197 males and 187 females, aged between six months and 84 years.

This brings to 14,077 the total number of HSI cases in Hong Kong.

The spokesman said that the total number of HSI cases might be revised according to further laboratory results.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (September 6):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 725 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 384 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 14,077 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 172 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 153 cases are in stable condition, ten in serious and nine in critical condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 4 staff members of public hospitals (two male and two female, including three nurses and one allied health professional).

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 37-year-old man in the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH). The patient developed flu symptoms on Sep 1 and was admitted to the isolation ward via the A&E Department of the hospital on Sep 5. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed that day. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated later that day and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is on ventilation support. The patient has well past health history. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

On the other hand, hospital records reveal that there are two Influenza A (H3) death cases, a 73-year-old male patient was certified dead at yesterday in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, and a 20-year-old male patient was certified dead today in North District Hospital.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said there had been 286 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) (HSI) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (September 7).

The new cases involve 150 males and 136 females, aged between eight months and 86 years.

This brings to 14,363 the total number of HSI cases in Hong Kong.

The spokesman noted that the total number of HSI cases would be revised according to further laboratory results.

Meanwhile, DH is investigating a confirmed HSI case involving a 23-month-old boy living in Kwai Tsing. He was admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital yesterday. The boy once required mechanical ventilation. He is now staying in paediatric intensive care unit in serious condition. A nasopharyngeal aspirate specimen taken by the hospital was tested positive for HSI. DH's investigations showed that the boy attended a playgroup in a centre in Mong Kok twice a week. There was no influenza-like illness outbreak in the centre. DH had visited the centre and provided health advice to the staff.

Among them, 149 cases are in stable condition, 10 in serious and nine in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 68-year-old man in the Prince of Wales Hospital. The patient had flu symptoms and was admitted via the Accident & Emergency Department of the hospital on September 1. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on September 4. He was prescribed with Tamiflu. His condition deteriorated later and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He is on ventilation support. The patient has chronic illnesses of hypertension and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included four female staff members of public hospitals (including three nurses and one supporting staff).

So far there were 443 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 326 have already recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Hong Kong: Fatal case of human swine influenza at PMH (9/7/09)

A spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (September 7):

A 71-year-old male patient with a history of lung cancer developed flu symptoms and was admitted to the Infectious Disease Centre via Accident & Emergency Department of PMH on September 1. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day. The patient was treated with Tamiflu and antibiotics. During hospitalisation, the patient was put on ventilation support. His condition continued to deteriorate and he was certified dead at 3.50pm today (September 7).

The case has been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.

We would like to express our condolences to the patient's family.

The Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) spokesperson made the following announcement today (September 7):

Since September 4, nine patients aged from five months to seven-year-old of a paediatric ward of the hospital had presented with influenza-like illness and fever.

Influenza tests were arranged for them and all were subsequently confirmed with Human Swine Influenza.

The condition of the patients is stable and they are being treated under isolation with Tamiflu or other medication for symptomatic relief. The hospital has enhanced the infection control measures according to the HA Infection Control Guidelines and will closely monitor the condition of the patients and staff.

Patient service remains normal in the ward after thorough cleaning and disinfection.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

Hong Kong: 504 new cases of human swine influenza (9/8/09)

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said there had been 504 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza (HSI) (Influenza A H1N1) in the 24 hours to 2.30pm today (September 8).

One of the cases was from an elderly home in Yau Tsim Mong.

The new cases involve 257 males and 247 females, aged between three months and 81 years.

This brings to 14,867 the total number of human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

The spokesman said that the total number of HSI cases might be revised according to further laboratory results.

The elderly home in Yau Tsim Mong involved an 80-year-old woman. She was admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital on September 6 and is now in stable condition.

There was no influenza-like illness outbreak in the institution.

Department of Health staff had provided health advice to the elderly home concerned, and would keep the staff and residents of the elderly homes under medical surveillance, the spokesman said.

A spokesman for Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) made the following announcement today (September 8):

Thirteen patients (aged 29 to 58) of a male ward for the severe mentally handicapped in SLH have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since September 2. All the patients are being treated under isolation and are now in stable condition. Appropriate tests have been arranged for the patients. Viral test results of all the patients are positive to Influenza A but negative to human swine influenza.

Infection control measures of the concerned ward have already been stepped up.

Admission to and discharge from the ward have been suspended, while restricted visiting policy has been implemented.

Patients' relatives have been informed about the situation.

All other patients and the staff in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

Hong Kong: Four schools are advised to suspend classes (9/8/09)

The Department of Health today (September 8) advised four schools in Kowloon City, Sha Tin, Tseung Kwan O and Kwun Tong to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of influenza in the schools.

The advice was made following the outbreaks of human swine influenza (HSI) in the schools involving 180 students and one member of staff, a spokesman for the department said.

The first case involved Form One and Form Two students of Diocesan Boys' School in Kowloon City, where a total of 59 boys, aged between 12 and 14, developed influenza symptoms since September 3. One student has been admitted to hospital in stable condition. Laboratory results showed that six boys were confirmed to have been infected with HSI. As all affected students came from Form One and Form Two, DH advised the school to suspend these two grades from September 9 to 15.

The second case involved Shatin College in Sha Tin, where 42 boys and 43 girls aged between 10 and 19 presented with fever, cough and sore throat since September 2. One of them required hospitalisation. All of the affected are in stable condition. Laboratory results showed that nine students were confirmed to have been infected with HSI.

The third case involved Hong Chi Morninghill School, Tsui Lam in Tseung Kwan O. Six boys and eight girls aged between seven and 14 developed influenza symptoms since September 2. Two of them required hospitalisation. They are in stable condition. Respiratory specimens taken from two students were tested positive for HSI.

The fourth case involved CCC Kei Shun Special School in Kwun Tong, where 22 students aged between eight and 18 and a staff member developed influenza symptoms since September 3. Three of them were admitted to hospital in stable condition. Laboratory results showed that eight affected persons were confirmed to have been infected with HSI.

DH advised the three schools to suspend all classes for a week.

The department had visited the schools and advised the staff on infection control measures.

The schools are put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.

He was prescribed with Tamiflu. The patient has chronic illnesses of hypertension, hyperlipidemia and lung cancer.

The hospital will closely monitor his condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 10 staff members of public hospitals (two male and eight female, including six nurses, one allied health professional, one clerical staff and two supporting staff).

So far there were 453 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.Among them, 342 have already recovered and returned to work.

Hong Kong: Detection of human swine influenza virus resistant to Tamiflu (9/9/09)

A spokesman for the Department of Health (DH) said the department's Public Health Laboratory Services Branch (PHLSB) today (September 9) detected a strain of human swine influenza (HSI) virus which was resistant to oseltamivir (Tamiflu).

The virus was identified during PHLSB's sensitivity test of HSI virus to oseltamivir and zanamivir, the spokesman said.

"The is the third time Tamiflu resistance in HSI virus found in Hong Kong and this is the second local case.

"Tests showed that this strain is sensitive to zanamivir (Relenza)," he said.

The virus was isolated from the specimen taken from a 38-year-old man who had no history of taking Tamiflu. The patient developed flu-like symptoms on July 26 and his respiratory specimen taken at a Designated Flu Clinic was tested positive to HSI on July 30. Investigation revealed that four other family members also suffered from laboratory confirmed HSI including his wife, son, and two younger brothers sequentially at end of July.

One of his younger brothers, aged 32, who had onset of flu like symptoms on July 23 had received a full course of Tamiflu treatment.

Except for this patient, all available isolates from other members of the family, including the specimen taken from the younger brother before he received Tamiflu treatment, were tested to be sensitive to Tamiflu.

The patient and all other affected members had mild illnesses and recovered.

The spokesman said that there was no evidence of further transmission of Tamiflu-resistant HSI from the patient.

The spokesman said that PHLSB conducted routine sensitivity tests on specimens taken from confirmed HSI patients.

''So far more than 3000 HSI samples had been tested for sensitivity in Hong Kong. The case will be reported to the World Health Organization (WHO), the spokesman said.

He reiterated that Hong Kong had an intensive influenza surveillance system on antiviral resistant influenza viruses.

"We will closely liaise with WHO and overseas health authorities and monitor the global development of antiviral resistant HSI virus," he said.

Hong Kong: Two schools advised to suspend classes (9/9/09)

The Department of Health today (September 9) advised a school in Sha Tin and one in Sham Shui Po to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (HSI).

The advice was made following the outbreaks of human swine influenza in the schools involving 24 students, a spokesman for the department said.

The first case involved Caritas Lok Jun School in Sha Tin, where 10 students aged 6 to 18 had developed fever, cough and sore throat since September 4 but did not require hospitalisation. Laboratory results showed that one of the students was confirmed to have been infected with HSI.

The other school is CCC Kei Chun Kindergarten in Sham Shui Po, where 14 students, aged 3 to 6, and two staff had presented with fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat since September 3. Two of them were admitted to hospitals and had been discharged after treatment. Laboratory results showed that four students and one staff member were confirmed to have been infected with HSI.

All of the affected are in stable condition.

The department had visited the schools and advised the staff on infection control measures.

The schools are under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.

Hong Kong: Cleansing arrangements stepped up at LCSD facilities to ensure hygiene (9/9/09)

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department announced today (September 9) that a security guard from an out-sourcing security company, working at Hong Kong Museum of Art was confirmed to have been infected with human swine influenza.

He has sought medical treatment and took sick leave.

The department said the security guard would only resume duty upon full recovery.

Staff of the Museum of Art have been told of the guard's condition and the public has been notified by notices posted at the venue.

Operation of the venue remains normal.

Staff are advised to seek medical consultation if they have any flu symptoms.

Cleaning and disinfection of the public areas in the venue, the concerned staff member's work areas and commonly touched surfaces have been arranged to prevent the spread of the disease.

Hong Kong: Fatal case of community-associated MRSA (9/10/09)

The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health today (September 10) confirmed a fatal case of community-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (CA-MRSA) infection involving a 73-year-old man.

The patient developed chest pain, cough and shortness of breath on August 25.

He was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on August 30 with pneumonia. His condition deteriorated further and he passed away on September 5.

The patient's endotrachael aspirate grew CA-MRSA while his nasopharyngeal aspirate was tested positive for influenza A (subtype H3). Investigation is ongoing.

The new cases involve 260 males and 254 females, aged between 19 days and 77 years.

This brings to 15,871 the total number of HSI cases in Hong Kong.

The spokesman noted that the total number of HSI cases would be revised according to further laboratory results.

Hong Kong: Secondary school advised to suspend classes (9/10/09)

The Department of Health today (September 10) advised the Hong Kong Sea School in Stanley to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of respiratory infections in the school.

The advice was made following the outbreak of an influenza-like-illness in the school, a spokesman for the department said.

Investigations revealed that 29 boys aged between 12 and 16 at the school had developed influenza symptoms since September 5. Fourteen of them have sought medical attention. No hospitalisation was required and all affected students were in stable condition.

The department has visited the school and advised staff on infection control measures.

The school has been put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
