Hong Kong: A death human swine influenza case in North District Hospital (8/31/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

North District Hospital (NDH) spokesperson made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza patient today (August 31):

On 24 August 2009, a 65-year-old male patient who just returned from Mainland China attended the Accident & Emergency Department of NDH due to shortness of breath, fever and cough. He was then admitted to the isolation ward.

The patient had history of asthma, pneumonia and heart disease.

On 25 August, the patient's airway aspirate was confirmed to be positive to Human Swine Flu test. His condition deteriorated and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on the same day. He also required ventilation support for his critically ill condition.

During his hospitalization, he had received Tamiflu, Relenza, and antibiotics. The patient succumbed at 4.48pm today (31 August).

The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The attending doctor has explained the condition to the deceased's family. The hospital would like to express our condolences to the patient's family.

Hong Kong: CHP is investigating human swine influenza outbreaks in two schools (8/31/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (August 31) urged members of the public and management of schools to take preventive measures against human swine influenza (Influenza A H1N1) by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

The appeal was made following the CHP's investigation into two reports of human swine influenza (HSI) outbreak in two schools in Shatin and Tseung Kwan O, affecting a total of 70 students.

The first school concerned is a secondary school in Shatin, involving 32 students. CHP's investigations revealed that 15 males and 17 females aged from 11 to 17, developed fever, cough and sore throat since August 21. The respiratory specimen taken from one of the students was tested positive to human swine influenza.

Another school concerned is a primary school in Tseung Kwan O. A total of 38 students, 24 males and 14 females, aged between six and 12 years, developed fever, cough and sore throat since August 24. Respiratory specimens taken from three of the students were tested positive to human swine influenza.

All of the affected students did not require hospitalisation. They are now in stable condition.

CHP staff have visited the schools and provided health advice to the staff.

The schools are now put under medical surveillance.

Hong Kong: A primary school and a secondary school are advised to suspend classes (8/31/09)

The Department of Health today (August 31) advised a primary school and a secondary school (Form 1) to suspend classes and to postpone commencement of the academic year for seven days respectively, to stop the possible spread of respiratory tract infectionin the schools.

The advice was made following the reports of outbreaks of influenza-like illness (ILI) in the two institutions involving 86 people, a spokesman for the department said.

The first case involved the Hong Kong International School (Upper and Lower Primary) in Southern District. A total of 29 boys and 36 girls, aged between four and 10, developed ILI symptoms since August 19. Laboratory results showed that four students were confirmed to have infected with human swine influenza. One of them has been admitted to hospital. All affected students are in stable condition.

The second case involved 21 boys, aged between 11 and 13, of Ying Wa College in Sham Shui Po. They had attended the Form One Bridging Course and developed ILI symptoms since August 23. The school was advised to postpone the commencement of the academic year by seven days for Form One classes, starting tomorrow. All affected students have sought medical attention and no hospitalization is required. Investigations into the cases are ongoing.

The department had visited the schools and advised staff on infection control measures. They are put under medical surveillance.

The spokesman called on parents to pay attention to the health condition of their children, and to remind them to observe good personal and environmental hygiene.

The Department of Health today (September 1) advised two schools in North Point and Shatin to suspend classes for seven days starting tomorrow to stop the possible spread of human swine influenza (HSI).

The advice was made following the outbreaks of human swine influenza in the schools involving 89 students, a spokesman for the department said.

The first case involved Hong Kong Japanese School (Junior Secondary Section) in North Point, where a total of 24 boys and 15 girls, aged between 12 and 15, developed fever, cough and sore throat since August 27. None of them required hospitalisation. Laboratory results showed that two students were confirmed to have been infected with HSI.

Another school concerned is the Primary School of Renaissance College in Shatin, where 30 boys and 20 girls aged between five and 10 presented with fever, cough and sore throat since August 24. Two of them required hospitalisation. All of the affected are stable condition. Laboratory results showed that two students were confirmed to have infected been with HSI.

The department had visited the schools and advised the staff on infection control measures.

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (September 1):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 930 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 328 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 12,135 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 96 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 81 cases are in stable condition, six in serious and nine in critical condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 12 staff members of public hospitals (four male and eight female, including two doctors, six nurses/nursing students, one allied health professional and three supporting staff).

So far there were 380 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 258 have already recovered and returned to work.

On the other hand, hospital records reveal that there are two more critical patients (male, aged 75 and 73), who have been tested positive for Influenza A (H3), are currently under treatment in United Christian Hospital (UCH) and Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital.

At the same time, the test result available today was positive for Influenza A(H3) for a 92-year-old male patient who was admitted to UCH on August 5 and died on August 10.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.

The spokesperson of the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza patient today (September 1).

A 50-year-old man developed flu symptoms on August 14 and was admitted to the isolation ward via the Accident and Emergency Department of AHNH on August 17. Positive result of human swine influenza (HSI) was confirmed on August 18 and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. The patient, an obese person with a body mass index of 30 or above (ie.high-risk patient group for HSI). His condition deteriorated further on August 19 and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and put on ventilation support. The patient succumbed at 6:08 pm today (September 1). The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

The healthcare team had all along been in close communication with the patient's family regarding the patient's condition. The hospital would like to express its sincere condolences to the patient's family.

Regarding the services of the eight Designated Flu Clinics (DFCs) and the confirmed human swine influenza patients admitted to public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) spokesman provided the following updates today (September 2):

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5pm) provide treatment to a total of 1,062 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 321 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 12,456 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 104 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 86 cases are in stable condition, seven in serious and 11 in critical condition.

There are four newly confirmed critical cases announced today, including a 71-year-old male patient of Princess Margaret Hospital (hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus), a 48-year-old male patient of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus), a 72-year-old female patient of Tseung Kwan O Hospital (asthma and Diabetes Mellitus) and a 67-year-old male patient of United Christian Hospital (chronic airway disease). They developed influenza symptoms between August 27 to 30. The test results for human swine influenza were confirmed between September 1 to 2 and they were prescribed with Tamiflu. Their condition deteriorated and are currently on ventilation support. They are now in critical condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 15 staff members of public hospitals (five male and 10 female, including two doctors, six nurses, two allied health professionals, one administrative staff and four supporting staff).

So far there were 395 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 272 have already recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) spokesperson made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (September 2):

A 59-year-old male patient with chronic disease developed flu symptoms on August 15. The patient attended the Accident & Emergency Department of YCH and was admitted to the isolation room on August 20. The patient received Tamiflu and antibiotics treatment. His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on August 21. A positive result for HSI was confirmed on the same day. He was in critical condition requiring ventilation support and receiving Relenza treatment, etc. His condition continued to deteriorate and he succumbed at 1.57am today (September 2).

The case was reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.

The healthcare team has all along been in close communication with the patient's family regarding the patient's condition. The hospital would like to express its sincere condolences to the patient's family.

A 47-year-old male patient with history of leukemia was admitted to PYNEH Intensive Care Unit via the Accident and Emergency Department for fever and shortness of breath on August 27. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on August 28 and he was given tamiflu and antibiotics treatment. He remained in critical condition and required ventilation support during hospitalisation. His condition continued to deteriorate and he succumbed at 4.06pm today.

The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The healthcare team has all along been in close communication with the patient's family regarding the patient's condition.

The case will be referred to Coroner.

Hong Kong: CHP urges vigilance against community-associated MRSA (9/3/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (September 3) called on people to be vigilant against infection by community-associated Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA), a drug resistant bacterium.

The appeal was made following the CHP's investigation into a confirmed invasive CA-MRSA case involving a 42-year-old man living in Tsuen Wan. The man presented with fever, cough and chest discomfort on August 10 and was admitted to Yan Chai Hospital the same day. He was transferred to Queen Mary Hospital on August 27 and is now in serious condition. The patient was diagnosed to have endocarditis, septicaemia and pneumonia. His blood culture grew CA-MRSA. The CHP's investigations showed that the patient's household contacts did not develop any symptoms of CA-MRSA infection. An investigation is ongoing.

MRSA is a type of staphylococcus aureus that is resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics.It is a common infection worldwide. In recent years, many countries observed MRSA infections in healthy individuals who have not been hospitalised or stayed in other healthcare facilities or institutions, nor received medical procedures in the past one year before onset of symptoms. They are known as CA-MRSA infections and usually have special patterns of antibiotic resistance. It was widely recognised that indiscriminate use of antibiotics may contribute to antibiotics resistance, a CHP spokesman said.

People are advised not to use antibiotics without medical professional advice.

If they are advised by doctors to take antibiotics, they should take the medicine according to the prescribed frequency and dosage. People should observe good personal hygiene including washing hands with soap frequently.

The Designated Flu Clinics today (as at 5.00pm) provide treatment to a total of 995 patients with flu-like symptoms.

As at 2.30pm today, there were 492 newly confirmed cases of human swine influenza in the past 24 hours.

This brings to 12,948 the total number of confirmed human swine influenza cases in Hong Kong.

Currently, a total of 111 confirmed cases are staying in public hospitals for treatment.

Among them, 94 cases are in stable condition, seven in serious and 10 in critical condition.

The newly confirmed critical case announced today is a 52-year-old female patient in Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH). The patient attended the Accident and Emergency Department of PWH for flu symptoms today (3 September). Her condition deteriorated and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. The patient was prescribed Tamiflu and on ventilation support. The test result for human swine influenza is confirmed positive today. The hospital will closely monitor her condition.

Furthermore, the confirmed cases announced today included 13 staff members of public hospitals (two male and 11 female, including six nurses/nursing students, four clerical staff and three supporting staff).

So far there were 408 HA staff members being confirmed as human swine influenza.

Among them, 284 have already recovered and returned to work.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (September 3):

A 55 year-old male patient with a history of nasopharyngeal cancer attended the Accident & Emergency Department of TMH for flu symptoms on August 30 and was admitted to the isolation ward. His condition deteriorated on the same day and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. The test result for human swine influenza was confirmed positive on August 31. He was in critical condition requiring ventilation support and was prescribed Relenza. His condition continued to deteriorate and he succumbed at 3.47pm today (September 3).

The case was reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.

TMH will refer the case to Coroner.

The hospital would like to express its condolences to the patient's family.

The HA spokesman reminded the public that HA has progressively resume service for chronic patients with scheduled appointment at the eight designated flu clinics (DFC). Chronic patients who have been pre-scheduled for follow up at the DFCs should go to the clinics according to their date of original appointment, bringing along the appointment slip and Identity Card.

Other general outpatient services such as episodic disease, injection and wound care will not be resumed at these DFCs for the time being.

Patients with other illnesses are advised to seek medical treatment at other general outpatient clinics in the district or private practitioners.

Hong Kong: Princess Margaret Hospital announced a human swine influenza patient death case (9/5/09)

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza patient today (September 5):

A 73 year-old female patient with a history of Thalassaemia attended the Accident & Emergency Department of PMH for septic shock and flu symptoms on September 4 and was admitted to medical ward. Her condition deteriorated on the same day (September 4) and she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for treatment. She was prescribed Tamiflu and respiratory sample was taken for laboratory test on influenza. During hospitalization, the patient was under close monitoring. Her condition continued to deteriorate and she was certified dead at 9.19 pm on the same day. The microbiology laboratory of PMH confirmed the positive result of human swine influenza at around 1.30 pm today (September 5) and reported the case to HA Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.

The case has also been referred to Coroner.

The hospital would like to express our condolences to the patient's family.
