Pok Oi Hospital clustering of Human Metapneumovirus cases


The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson for Pok Oi Hospital (POH) made the following announcement today (February 23):

Seven patients (aged 32 to 78) and a staff member in a male infirmary ward had presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since February 19.

Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patients and test results of three patients were positive to Human Metapneumovirus.

The concerned patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition. The concerned staff member is on sick leave.

Admission to the ward has been suspended and restricted visiting is being imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guideline. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.

One more 69-year-old male patient had presented with fever and respiratory symptoms.

Appropriate viral tests had been arranged for the patient and the test result was positive to Human Metapneumovirus.

Hospital Authority issues clarification on human metapneumovirus infection cases


The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding the rumour spreading around online media yesterday (February 26) that the cases of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) infection in Pok Oi Hospital are the same as infection by the Novel Coronavirus (i.e. New SARS), the Hospital Authority spokesman issued the following clarification today (February 27):

Human metapneumovirus infection most commonly occurs in late winter and early spring.

The virus was first reported in the Netherlands in 2001.
Human metapneumovirus is a single stranded RNA virus, belonging to the Paramyxoviridae family, which includes the parainfluenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus.

It is neither SARS nor the novel coronavirus.

According to information on the Centre for Health Protection website, children are primarily affected. Adults, especially elderly and the immunocompromised, are also susceptible.

Human metapneumovirus causes clinical symptoms of varying severity in children such as fever, cough, difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath.

Some children may also present with otitis media, diarrhoea, vomiting, rash, and febrile convulsions.

In adults, hMPV usually causes mild disease characterised by cough, hoarseness, runny nose and sputum production.

Transmission is likely to occur by direct or close contact with infectious secretions and the incubation period is usually three to five days.

Public hospitals will immediately report and arrange laboratory tests for cases of notifiable diseases in accordance with established protocol. The CHP will issue press releases on government websites to inform the media and the public on the test results.

Regarding a male infirmary ward at Pok Oi Hospital (POH) in which some patients had been confirmed with Human Metapneumovirus and a male long stay ward in Castle Peak Hospital (CPH) in which some patients had been confirmed with Influenza A recently, the spokesperson for New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) made the following update today (March 2):

One more 74-year-old patient in the concerned POH ward had presented with fever and respiratory symptoms.

Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patient and the test results is pending.

The patient is being treated under isolation and is in stable condition.

Human Metapneumovirus infection most commonly occurs in late winter and early spring. The virus was first reported in Netherlands in 2001. Human Metapneumovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus and belongs to Paramyxoviridae family, which includes Parainfluenza Virus and Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

The spokesperson stressed that it is neither SARS nor novel coronavirus.

In addition, three more patients (aged 25 to 57) in the concerned CPH ward had presented with respiratory symptoms.

Two more patients (aged 53 and 80) in the ward were found to have fever.

Appropriate viral tests have been arranged for the patients and the test results were positive to Human Metapneumovirus.

In addition, in the process of strengthening infection control measures, the hospital has confirmed the test results of three other asymptomatic patients (aged 27 to 61) to be positive to Human Metapneumovirus. The patients concerned are being managed under isolation and are in stable condition.
