SFH thanks public for help in curbing influenza
March 26 2008, 4.59.09

The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, today (March 26) thanked schools and parents for their support and understanding of the Government's decision to advance the Easter break of primary schools, kindergartens, kindergartens cum child care centres and special schools to prevent the spread of influenza in schools.

"The Government, schools and parents should stay alert to influenza after resumption of classes as we are still in the peak season. The Government will continue to monitor the latest influenza situation. It will also issue guidelines to advise schools on the circumstances under which they should report influenza outbreaks to the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health," Dr Chow said.

He reminded the public to know the facts about influenza, take good care of themselves and their families, and maintain good personal hygiene.

If they fell ill, they should rest properly and should not go to school or work in order to recover quickly and to avoid spreading the disease to other people.

Vigilance against seasonal RSV urged
March 31 2008, 14.29.29

A spokesman for the Centre for Heath Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (March 31) urged members of the public, in particular parents and management of schools and institutions to take stringent infection control measures against respiratory tract infection caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

The spokesman said that RSV activity usually starts to increase between March and April and will lasts till August.

He said during the week ending March 22 there were 60 viral detections by the Public Health Laboratory Centre while the baseline RSV detection is less than 20 per week.

So far this year, two RSV outbreaks have been reported to the CHP.

There were 13 and 30 RSV outbreaks record in 2006 and 2007.

The situation this year is similar to previous years.

"RSV is a common cause of respiratory tract infection. It usually affects elderly people and young children at the age of five or below," the spokesman said.

The disease is spread by direct contact with infectious secretions and can be easily transmitted among individuals in institutional settings.

"The incubation period is one to 10 days and is usually five to seven days. Common symptoms include fever, chills, headache and decreased appetite," he noted.

To prevent respiratory tract infection caused by RSV, members of the public are advised to take the following measures:
* Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
* Keep hands clean and wash hands properly;
* Wash hands when they are contaminated by respiratory secretions;
* Cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly;
* Infected persons should avoid contact with children or those with low body resistance.

Streptococcus Suis Case---Hong Kong

Streptococcus Suis Case---Hong Kong

Not on the CHP website yet:

http://media-newswire.com/release_1062965.html

Case of Streptococcus suis infection under investigation

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (March 31) investigating a case of laboratory confirmed infection of Streptococcus suis, a kind of bacteria isolated from pigs. The case involves a 49-year-old man living in Wong Tai Sin, who developed fever, vomiting and confusion on March 27 and was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital the next day. He is in critical condition.

A CHP spokesman said the patient had no recent travel history. His home contact did not have any symptoms.

This is the second reported case of Streptococcus suis infection in 2008. A total of six, eight and 13 cases were reported in 2007, 2006 and 2005 respectively.

The spokesman said Streptococcus suis infection may present as meningitis ( inflammation of the membrane enclosing the brain ), septicaemia ( blood stream infection ), and less commonly endocarditis ( inflammation of the inner lining of the heart chambers ), arthritis and bronchopneumonia ( a kind of lung infection involving the bronchioles ). Streptococcus suis infection could be treated with appropriate antibiotics.

To prevent the disease, people are advised to always observe personal and environmental hygiene practices and avoid contact with pigs that are sick or dead from diseases and their excreta or body fluid. If contact with pigs or raw pork is necessary, one should:

?E Use protective gloves;
?E Wash hands after handling pigs or raw pork; and
?E Clean and cover all wounds properly.

People with suspected symptoms should consult their doctors as soon as possible and report their relevant exposure histories.

They can obtain more information on Streptococcus suis from the CHP website ( http://www.chp.gov.hk ). They can also obtain latest information on infectious diseases in other places on the department's Hong Kong Travellers' Health Service website ( http://www.travelhealth.gov.hk ).
