Vigilance over respiratory virus urged




The Centre for Heath Protection has called for vigilance against Respiratory Syncytial Virus-caused respiratory tract infection which usually starts to increase between March and April and lasts until August.

The public, particularly parents and management of schools and institutions, should take stringent infection- control measures.

The centre received two virus outbreaks reports so far this year. There were 13 outbreaks in 2006 and and 30 in 2007. The situation this year is similar to previous ones.

The virus is a common cause of respiratory tract infection. It usually affects old people and young children aged five or below. People should maintain good personal and environmental hygiene to prevent infection.

The Centre for Health Protection today received two reports of influenza-like illness outbreaks involving four Sha Tin primary students and four Tsuen Wan elderly home residents.

Three men and a woman aged 76-92 at the Riviera Elderly Centre also came down with a flu-like illness and two have been admitted to Yan Chai Hospital and tested positive for influenza-B.

The centre has visited the institutions and provided health advice to staff.

It has also received a report involving a three-year-old girl under the flu surveillance arrangement set up with private and public hospitals. She is stable in Tuen Mun Hospital and test results are pending.

They spoke of statistics of influenza-like, statistics of hospitalizations, and of deaths, but I didn't see the numbers for people who contract "flu".

And as the article states:

Note: (*) Influenza-like illness is a clinical diagnosis. It generally refers to cases where the patient develops fever (over 38 degrees Celsius) and cough or sore throat. The illness is not equivalent to confirmed influenza.

Kindergarten closed for disinfection

The Centre for Health Protection has advised a Yau Ma Tei kindergarten to suspend classes for one week for disinfection as its 47 students and one staff have taken sick leave.

Of them, 33 students developed fever with mild respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms varying from cough, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea from April 10. Initial investigations suggest the cause is a viral infection.

Four students were admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. All of them are now in stable condition.

Meanwhile, the centre has confirmed an upper respiratory tract infection outbreak involving 18 children and two staff at a Mong Kok children's home.

They came down with fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat April 4 to 11. Five consulted general practitioners or outpatient clinics while five others were admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Their condition is stable.

The Centre for Health Protection is probing three flu-like illness outbreak reports involving 13 people aged three to 90 from two kindergartens and an elderly home.

The first case involves two boys and a girl, all aged three, from Jingle Bell Kindergarten in Sha Tin. One has been admitted to Baptist Hospital.

The second involves three boys and two girls, all aged four, from Fanling Assemblies of God Kindergarten. One was sent to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital and has been discharged.

The third involves three men and two women, aged 49 to 90, from the Sage Tung Lin Kok Yuen Centre for the Young-at-Heart in Hong Kong East. Four were sent to Ruttonjee Hospital and one has been discharged. Influenza-B virus has been confirmed the cause.

Influenza or other respiratory viruses can cause flu-like illness. Centre staff have visited the institutions to provide health advice.

Meanwhile, a report involving an 11-year-old boy was received today under the influenza surveillance arrangement set up by the centre with hospitals. The boy is now in Prince of Wales Hospital and his preliminary influenza test is negative.
