The Department of Health has earmarked $9.2 million to incorporate a vaccine against varicella ? commonly known as chickenpox ? into the childhood immunisation programme, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says.
In a written reply to a lawmaker?s query today, Dr Ko said the department will announce the implementation details within this year. It has been monitoring chickenpox vaccine supply and noted global demand for the vaccine has risen in recent years and supply is limited.
To ensure an adequate supply of varicella vaccine after it has been incorporated into the immunisation programme, the department will enter into a contract with the vaccine supplier, said Dr Ko. The supplier must pledge to secure a sufficient vaccine supply.
