As at noon today (April 4), public hospitals had reported to the Department of Health the admission of 166 patients (82 male and 84 female, aged 6 to 93) in the past 24 hours who met the reporting criteria of COVID-19. Appropriate tests have been arranged for the patients.

There are 724 patients under isolation currently. So far, 186 patients who had COVID-19 confirmed or probable infections have been discharged upon recovery.

CHP investigates 17 additional cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health announced that as of 4pm today (April 4), the CHP is investigating 17 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, taking the number of cases to 863 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 862 confirmed cases and one probable case).

The newly reported cases announced today involve nine males and eight females aged between 6 and 93. Among them, 10 had a travel history during the incubation period and seven are overseas students. The CHP's epidemiological investigations and relevant contact tracing on the confirmed cases are ongoing. For case details and contact tracing information, please see the Annex.

The CHP urged members of the public to maintain an appropriate social distance with other people as far as possible in their daily lives. In particular, they should go out less and avoid social activities such as meal gatherings or other gatherings to reduce the chance of contacting infected persons, who may not present any symptoms, and minimise the risk of outbreak clusters emerging in the community.

A spokesman for the CHP said, "In view of the proliferation of the disease and continuous increase in the number of cases reported around the world, members of the public are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong.

"The CHP also strongly urges the public to maintain at all times strict personal and environmental hygiene, which is key to personal protection against the infection and prevention of the spread of the disease in the community. On a personal level, members of the public should wear a surgical mask when having respiratory symptoms, taking public transport or staying in crowded places. They should also perform hand hygiene frequently, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes.

"As for household environmental hygiene, members of the public are advised to maintain drainage pipes properly, regularly pour water into drain outlets (U-traps) and cover all floor drain outlets when they are not in use. After using the toilet, they should put the toilet lid down before flushing to avoid spreading germs,"

The CHP will report the cases to the World Health Organization, National Health Commission, Health Commission of Guangdong Province, relevant health authorities and the Hospital Authority.

Pok Oi Hospital gives response regarding a suspected hospital acquired case of COVID-19

Pok Oi Hospital (POH) gives the following response regarding a suspected hospital acquired case of COVID-19 today (April 4):

A 93-year-old male patient with limited mobility was admitted to a Medicine and Geriatric (M&G) ward on 5/F of POH on March 10 because of stroke. He was then transferred to another M&G ward on 8/F on March 28 until he was discharged on April 1. On April 3, the patient was admitted to POH for fever and vomiting. Since he has symptoms of chest infection, he was admitted to a surveillance ward and his nasopharyngeal swab was taken and tested positive for COVID-19. The patient was transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital for isolation and treatment with serious condition.

A team of experts including the Chair of Infectious Diseases, Department of Microbiology of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Yuen Kwok-yung; Chief Infection Control Officer of Hospital Authority, Dr Raymond Lai, and the experts from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) paid a visit to POH this afternoon. Records revealed that a 33-year-old male patient who had stayed in the 5/F M&G ward with the index patient between March 17 to 18 was tested positive to COVID-19 on March 27 (Case 455). This patient who was confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 was arranged to stay outside the cubicle of the index patient during hospitalisation. The experts suspected that the virus was transmitted through indirect contact therefore environmental specimen had been collected.

Patient admission has been suspended and deep cleansing has been arranged for the two M&G wards that the patient had stayed. There are 69 male patients and 5 female patients, aged from 21 to 90-year-old have to be quarantined. POH will arrange tests on COVID-19 for them. POH will also arrange COVID-19 testing for the healthcare workers and staff who have been in touch with the index patient. There will be about 150 people according to preliminary counting. Besides, there is one community nurse of POH who have visited the patient's residence on April 2 for nursing procedure including the replacement of nasogastric tubes. The community nurse has been classified as close contact by the CHP and will be sent to quarantine camp.

POH will continue working closely with CHP on this incident.

There are 729 patients under isolation currently. So far, 236 patients who had COVID-19 confirmed or probable infections have been discharged upon recovery.

With the service consolidation of the AsiaWorld-Expo and North Lantau Hospital test centres, and service commencement of the triage and test centres at the Accident and Emergency Departments of various public hospitals, the Hospital Authority (HA) will cease to announce test service statistics of the AsiaWorld-Expo centre separately beginning today. All preliminary positive test results obtained by public hospital laboratories will be further confirmed by the Department of Health and announced as confirmed cases collectively.

North District Hospital announces a GOPC staff member confirmed of COVID-19 infection

Regarding a staff member of Shek Wu Hui Jockey Club General Out-patient Clinic being confirmed with COVID-19 infection, the North District Hospital spokesperson today (April 8) announced the following:

A 57-year-old operation assistant in the clinic has developed cough, sore throat but without fever since April 3. She had no travel history in the previous 14 days and has no known contact with confirmed cases of COVID-19. The staff member was tested for COVID-19 with deep throat saliva on April 7 and test result available in the evening has confirmed that she has tested positive to the virus. She is currently receiving treatment in isolation in the North District Hospital and is in stable condition.

She is mainly responsible for cleansing duties in the clinic and has been wearing personal protective equipment during work. The clinic has no records of handling patients with confirmed COVID-19 so far.

The clinic is tracing the close contacts of the staff member with the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health to follow up on the necessary tests and quarantine arrangements. The clinic will closely monitor the health of all staff members.

The clinic will be temporarily closed for a thorough disinfection today (April 8). Clinic staff will contact the patients who have made an appointment and the patients will be arranged to visit the Fanling Family Medicine Centre in the same district. Patients who have any enquiries can call the clinic hotline 2670 0211 during office hours.

CHP investigates 13 additional cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health has announced that as of 4pm today (April 9), the CHP was investigating 13 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, taking the number of cases to 974 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 973 confirmed cases and one probable case).

​ Meanwhile, the CHP has been closely reviewing the usage and demand of various quarantine centres (QCs). In view of the rapid development of the COVID-19 epidemic and the relatively high number of close contacts, it is anticipated that the usage of quarantine facilities will remain high. The Scientific Committee on Emerging and Zoonotic Diseases and the Scientific Committee on Infection Control under the CHP earlier made a recommendation on the duration of stay of confinees under QCs based on their capacity. Subject to the occupancy of QCs, the confinees at QCs would be quarantined for the first 10 days and be put under home quarantine for the remaining four days when necessary. Having considered the limited available quarantine facilities and the above recommendation, the CHP will implement in phases the arrangement in various QCs starting from April 11 (Saturday), to ensure that there are adequate quarantine facilities to cope with the development of the disease.

​ The CHP emphasised that all confinees under quarantine at QCs are asymptomatic. After the implementation of the above arrangement, confinees will undergo COVID-19 viral tests before discharge from QCs. Only if they have tested negative and have passed the assessments on their health conditions and other relevant factors by the healthcare professionals to prove that they are deemed appropriate to be put under home quarantine for the remaining four days will such an arrangement be made. QC staff members will also arrange electronic wristbands for these confinees to comply with the home quarantine requirement before they are discharged from QCs.

The CHP urged members of the public to maintain an appropriate social distance with other people as far as possible in their daily lives. In particular, they should go out less and avoid social activities such as meal gatherings or other gatherings to reduce the chance of contacting infected persons, who may not present any symptoms, and minimise the risk of outbreak clusters emerging in the community.

A spokesman for the CHP said, "In view of the proliferation of the disease and continuous increase in the number of cases reported around the world, members of the public are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong.

"The CHP also strongly urges the public to maintain at all times strict personal and environmental hygiene, which is key to personal protection against infection and prevention of the spread of the disease in the community. On a personal level, members of the public should wear a surgical mask when having respiratory symptoms, taking public transport or staying in crowded places. They should also perform hand hygiene frequently, especially before touching the mouth, nose or eyes.

"As for household environmental hygiene, members of the public are advised to maintain drainage pipes properly, regularly pour water into drain outlets (U-traps) and cover all floor drain outlets when they are not in use. After using the toilet, they should put the toilet lid down before flushing to avoid spreading germs."

The CHP will report the cases to the World Health Organization, the National Health Commission, the Health Commission of Guangdong Province, relevant health authorities and the Hospital Authority.

The CHP has set up hotlines (2125 1111 and 2125 1122), which operate from 8am to midnight daily, for public enquiries. As at 4pm today, a total of 88 750 calls were received.

Public hospitals daily update on COVID-19 cases

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

As at noon today (April 11), public hospitals had reported to the Department of Health the admission of 55 patients (31 male and 24 female, aged 2 to 75) in the past 24 hours who met the reporting criteria of COVID-19. Appropriate tests have been arranged for the patients.

There are 678 patients under isolation currently. So far, 336 patients who had COVID-19 confirmed or probable infection have been discharged upon recovery.

The Hospital Authority will maintain close contact with the Centre for Health Protection to monitor the latest developments and to inform the public and healthcare workers on the latest information in a timely manner.

CHP investigates 11 additional cases of COVID-19

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health has announced that as of 4pm today (April 11), the CHP was investigating 11 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, taking the number of cases to 1 001 in Hong Kong so far (comprising 1 000 confirmed cases and one probable case).

In addition, the DH has been closely monitoring and reviewing the health quarantine and COVID-19 testing arrangements for inbound travellers. Starting April 9, asymptomatic inbound travellers arriving on flights from the UK are required to proceed to the DH's Temporary Specimen Collection Centre (TSCC) at the AsiaWorld-Expo to collect their deep throat saliva samples and wait for the test results there. The arrangement has been running smoothly.

Upon the assessment that among the imported cases confirmed locally, most of them have been to the UK, followed by the US and European countries, hence asymptomatic inbound travellers arriving on flights from the US and other areas in Europe are required to proceed to the TSCC to collect their deep throat saliva samples and wait for the test results there starting next Monday (April 13). If the number of passengers on the flights from the above areas exceed the maximum capacity of TSCC, the passengers will be allowed to go home or a designated place after specimen collection for compulsory quarantine.

If tested positive, they will be arranged for admission to hospital as soon as possible for treatment while the close contacts who travelled with them will be sent to designated quarantine centres. For those who are tested negative, they can go home or to a designated place to continue completion of the 14-day compulsory quarantine.
