Hong Kong may have to suspend its live chicken imports from the mainland in the next three weeks as one incoming batch is suspected to be infected with the H7N9 bird flu.

Preliminary H7 DNA rapid tests on samples suggest that one batch of chickens from Foshan, Guangdong may have been infected, the Food and Health Bureau said on Monday.

Further results will be announced later on Monday, the bureau announced.

Under the present mechanism, the Cheung Sha Wan wholesale poultry market will be closed for 21 days for cleaning once there are positive results in the bird flu DNA tests. Imports will also be suspended during the period.

The rapid tests on imported live chickens were introduced in April last year when the H7N9 outbreak emerged in the mainland. Blood-serum tests were added on top of it last Friday.

Cheung Sha Wan Poultry Wholesale Market will be shut for 21 days until February 18 after a batch of live chickens from Foshan, Guangdong was confirmed to have H7N9 avian influenza virus today, Secretary for Food & Health Dr Ko Wing-man says.

Briefing the media on the Government's measures to prevent the virus spread, Dr Ko said that all live poultry in the wholesale market at Cheung Sha Wan - about 20,000 birds - will be destroyed tomorrow.

Live poultry imports from the Mainland will be suspended during the market closure, and there will be no imports from Foshan's affected farm until it has been cleared of infection, he added.

Dr Ko said local farms will stop sending chickens to the wholesale market for three weeks and the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department will collect more samples from the farms to monitor whether local poultry have been infected.

Centre for Health Protection officers will follow up on poultry wholesalers' and poultry market workers' health conditions. (http://j.mp/1b0VlRL)
