Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Kowloon Hospital
The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson of Kowloon Hospital (KH) made the following announcement today (October 26):
An 81-year-old patient admitted to a female rehabilitation ward in KH was confirmed on October 17 to have an infection of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE).
She has been transferred to the isolation ward for further treatment and observation and is in stable condition.
In accordance with infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened patients who had contact with the index patient.
Two other patients, aged 77 and 84, who had stayed in the same ward were confirmed to be VRE carriers without clinical symptoms. They have also been transferred to the isolation ward and are in stable condition.
Infection control measures have been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the concerned ward are under close surveillance.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
The spokesperson of Kowloon Hospital (KH) made the following announcement today (October 29):
A 90-year-old patient admitted to a male extended-care ward of KH was confirmed to have infection of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) on October 24. He has been transferred to the isolation ward for further treatment and observation. The patient is in stable condition.
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has screened patients who had contact with the index patient.
Six more patients (aged 30 to 83) who had stayed in the same ward were confirmed to be VRE carriers without clinical symptoms. Among the six patients, three have been transferred to the isolation ward in Queen Elizabeth Hospital because of their own underlying illness, while the other three have been transferred to the isolation ward. All of them are in stable condition.
Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:
Regarding the confirmation earlier that there were in-patients in an extended-care ward found to be Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) carriers, the spokesperson of Kowloon Hospital made the following update today (November 1):
In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, screening of contacts, including those VRE carriers who had been transferred to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), has been performed.
One 77-year-old male patient in the QEH Orthopaedics ward was confirmed today as a VRE carrier, without clinical symptoms, during this contact tracing. The patient was admitted to QEH on October 24. He is staying in an isolation ward for further treatment and is in stable condition.
The hospital will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation.
The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
