The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) made the following announcement today (March 31):

Nine patients (aged from 35 to 62) and one male staff member in a male ward for the severely mentally handicapped of SLH have presented with fever and respiratory symptoms since March 26. Appropriate tests were arranged for the patients. All were positive for human Metapneumovirus.

The patients are being treated under isolation and in stable condition, while the staff member is on sick leave. Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up. Other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

Regarding a male ward for the severely mentally handicapped of Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) in which several patients had been confirmed with human Metapneumoviral infection, the hospital spokesperson made the following update today (April 1):

Two more patients (aged 41 and 46) and one female staff member in the ward presented with coughing symptoms. Appropriate tests were arranged and test results are pending. The patients are being treated under isolation, while the staff member is on sick leave.

All are in stable condition. Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have been stepped up. Other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

Five more patients (aged from 44 to 70) and two female staff members in another male severely mentally handicapped ward had presented with fever and flu symptoms. Appropriate tests had been arranged for the patients and the test results of three of them are positive for human Metapneumovirus.

The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition. The two staff members have recovered. Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward is imposed. Infection control measures of the ward have already been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.
