The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The spokesperson of Siu Lam Hospital (SLH) made the following announcement today (August 26):

Four patients (aged 34 to 57) and one female staff in a male severe mentally handicapped ward of SLH have presented with fever and flu symptoms since August 21. Appropriate viral tests were arranged for the patients.

Test results of three patients were found positive to Human Influenza A (H3).

The patients are being treated under isolation and all are in stable condition, while the concerned staff member has resumed duty after taken sick leave for 2 days.

Admission to the ward has been suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed and infection control measures have already been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding a male ward for the severe mentally handicapped at Siu Lam Hospital in which three patients had been confirmed with Human Influenza A (H3) infection, the hospital spokesman issued the following update today (August 27):

Two more patients (aged 28 and 32) in the ward have presented with fever and flu symptoms.

Appropriate viral tests were arranged for them. Test results, including one pending case announced earlier, were positive for Human Influenza A (H3).

The patients are being treated under isolation and are in stable condition. Admission to the ward is suspended. Restricted visits to and discharge from the ward have been imposed and infection control measures have been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.

One more patient (aged 20) in the ward had presented with fever and flu symptoms. Appropriate viral tests have been arranged for him. Test result was found positive to Human Influenza A (H3).

The patient is being treated under isolation and in stable condition.

Admission to the ward is suspended.

Restricted visiting to and discharge from the ward have been imposed and infection control measures have been stepped up. All other patients in the ward are under close surveillance.

The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow up.
