[FONT=&#24494]The AFCD received notification from the University of Hong Kong that three bird droppings collected from the Mai Po Nature Conservation Area were found to contain the H5N6 avian influenza virus.
A team of researchers from the University of Hong Kong regularly entered the care area to collect samples to monitor avian flu. A team of environmental samples was collected on 25 November. Three samples of bird droppings collected in the basement of the 3-storey birdhouse were confirmed today Check out with H5N6 virus.
A spokesman for AFCD said there was no chicken farms within 3 kilometers of the area. Since the winter, AFCD has stepped up monitoring of avian influenza and has closely monitored the situation of live poultry farms and wholesale markets. Farmers, bird owners, licensed poultry and racing pigeons to take appropriate precautions.
WWF Hong Kong, which is responsible for managing the area, has stepped up cleaning and sanitation facilities such as birdwatching and pontoon bridges, and disinfectant pads at the entrance to the treatment area. In addition, AFCD is closely monitoring the situation of birds in the area and posting notices in the area to remind the public of their personal hygiene.
The spokesman reminded members of the public to avoid contact with wild birds and live poultry and their droppings and wash their hands thoroughly after contact with birds.Members of the public can call 1823 to contact the AFCD if they are found to have sick birds and dead birds, including wild birds and poultry carcasses.

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) was notified by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) that three samples of faecal droppings of birds taken from Mai Po Nature Reserve (MPNR) tested positive for H5N6 avian influenza (AI) virus, noted a spokesmanfor the department today (December 5).

Research team of HKU collects samples from the MPNR regularly for AI surveillance. Among the environmental samples collected on November 25, three samples of faecal droppings taken at a Gei Wai near the Tower Bird Hide have been confirmed to be positive for H5N6 today.

The spokesman said the World Wide Fund for Nature Hong Kong, the managing organisation of the MPNR, has stepped up cleansing and disinfection of tourist facilities including bird hides and floating boardwalk.
