Summary


  1. There was one new report of human avian influenza H5N1 infection in the past week. This case occurred in Hubei, China and was confirmed by the Ministry of Health in China on 4 June 2010.
  2. From 2005 to 2007, about 100 laboratory-confirmed cases of human avian influenza H5N1 were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) annually. In 2008 and 2009, 44 and 73 cases were confirmed respectively.

This report aims to highlight important international developments on avian influenza preparedness and control and to monitor global avian influenza activity in humans and birds.

Please note that the apparent inconsistency between Table 1 case count (33 human cases / 13 deaths) and Table 3&4 (21 cases / 9 deaths) is due to different calculation: the latest is referred to March-June time-frame.
