4th imported H1N1 case confirmed

The Centre for Health Protection has confirmed Hong Kong's fourth imported human swine flu case, involving a 19-year-old woman who flew in from New York May 18.

She sat in seat 43G of flight CX831 and did not have symptoms on the plane. She came down with a fever yesterday and was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital.

The girl, who studies in the US, was aboard the same flight as the first confirmed case-patient in Taiwan who sat in seat 41H, so she has been traced by the centre. Thirty travellers under surveillance have left the city, 24 are being monitored while five are yet to be contacted.

The centre is arranging checks for her family and other contacts.

Contact surveillance

Meanwhile, 50 close contacts to human swine flu patients have visited the department's five chest clinics for directly observed chemoprophylaxis plus medical surveillance since yesterday. Their conditions are normal.

Another 18 close contacts have chosen to stay at Lady MacLehose and Lei Yue Mun holiday villages for camp quarantine.

The centre said the risk of local transmission of the disease is growing, so the Government has started making mitigation-phase preparations.

Infectious agents

Human swine influenza virus type A-subtype H1 has been added to the list of infectious agents specified in the Prevention & Control of Disease Ordinance, requiring a laboratory owner or person-in-charge to notify the Director of Health immediately of any virus-leakage incidents.

The Department of Health said the move allows early detection of such incidents and enables the quick implementation of control measures to protect lab workers and prevent the spread of diseases.

The revision comes into effect today. The department has written to all laboratories informing them of the changes and reporting requirements.
