Hongkong at a time when the summer flu season, so far, the number in the public hospital, laboratory confirmed influenza more than 14 thousand. The Hongkong Department of health 5 China News Agency reporters query in an interview said that from May 5, 2017 to August 3rd, the total number of severe cases of influenza related to 458 cases, a total of 315 people were killed.
The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) has collaborated with the Hospital Authority (HA) and private hospitals to reactivate the enhanced surveillance for severe seasonal influenza cases (i.e. influenza-associated admissions to intensive care unit or deaths) among patients aged 18 or above since May 5, 2017. As of Aug 2, 431 severe cases (including 304 deaths) were recorded. Separately, 19 cases of severe paediatric influenza-associated complication/death (including three deaths) (aged below 18 years) were recorded in the same period.
[h=1]Flu peak passes after claiming 339 lives[/h] Three children and 336 adults have died during the summer flu peak season, one of the worst in recent years, but the Hospital Authority announced the peak period is subsiding.
Of the adults who died, 58 percent had not been vaccinated against the flu (196) compared with 140 who got shots.
There was no information yesterday on whether the three children who died had been vaccinated but the Centre for Health Protection said in its latest surveillance report in the week ending August 9, 89.5 percent of 19 severe flu cases among those under 18 did not get the vaccine for the 2016-17 season.
The authority reported 15,485 flu cases from May 5 to August 8 during the summer peak. Of these, 484 cases were severe - in which patients were hospitalized in intensive care unit or died. They included 466 adults and three children.
Among the severe cases, 80 percent of patients had underlying illnesses. The most common was cardiovascular disease, accounting for 150 death cases.
[h=1]Hong Kong announces end of summer influenza season[/h] Regarding severe influenza cases, in adults, 576 cases of influenza-associated admission to the Intensive Care Unit or death, including 428 deaths, were recorded from May 5 to Aug. 29 in the enhanced surveillance with the Hospital Authority and private hospitals.
Among children, in the same period, 19 cases of severe influenza-associated complication or death, including three deaths, were detected. The last case was reported on Aug. 2.
The average daily number of severe cases among all ages peaked at 11.3 per day in the seven-day period from July 12 to July 18, and then gradually decreased to 2.7 per day from Aug. 23 to Aug. 29.
