Honduras Closes Borders against Dengue

Tegucigalpa, Jun 19 (Prensa Latina) Honduran Public Health authorities intensified epidemiologic isolation on the borders with El Salvador and Nicaragua, to prevent entrance of a type of dengue fever more aggressive than the hemorrhagic variety.

The measures are part of actions by the Honduran Public Health Ministry to avoid an increase in the number of cases that would compel authorities to declare a state of emergency or alert.

Epidemiologic Surveillance director Jose Angel Vazquez said the frontier closing concerned the outbreak of dengue fever type 3, still not registered in Honduran national territory.

Official data reported until now are that there are 2,176 patients with classic dengue fever and 88 cases with hemorrhagic dengue fever, the latter considerably more than prior years.

Honduran authorities say these statistics are not enough to warrant a state of alert or emergency since the total number of affected people is not above prior periods.

Honduras: Panic Spreads with Dengue

Tegucigalpa, 7 Jul (Prensa Latina) Reports of dengue cases in Honduras has markedly increased over the weekend, with about 5,000 people infected from the classic strain, and over 200 by dengue hemorrhagic fever, health authorities revealed Saturday.

The disease keeps spreading alarmingly, and in the last seven days, hemorrhagic cases amounted to 221, and classic ones to 4,737, Health Minister Jenny Meza disclosed.

The amount of people infected with the two types of the virus so far this year almost doubled that of the same period last year, according to Meza.

Meanwhile, it was revealed this morning that new health facilities will be fitted out in the capital to cope with the huge number of patients.

The Honduran health ministry reported two people have died of the dengue hemorrhagic fever so far.

Honduran Dengue Fever Crisis Worsens

Tegucigalpa, Sept 2 (Prensa Latina)

The expansion of dengue fever in Honduras is reaching features of a national crisis, since almost 1,600 new cases were registered last week, most of them in the capital.

Despite the effort of health authorities there are insalubrious sectors in the city and negligence also facilitates the appearance of new beds for aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Statistics from the Honduran Public Health Ministry said eight people have died as a consequence of the dengue fever. The classical variety of the disease has affected 16,878 people, and the hemorrhagic one, 823 people.
Local newspaper El Heraldo reported more than 50 percent of the cases appeared in the capital, where it was questioned that the yellow alert be maintained, despite the number of affected people.

Honduran Public Health Minister Jenny Meza admitted the struggle should be intensified but she demanded greater compliance with cleaning measures and instructions.

She warned the appearance of symptoms like headaches, muscle aches, fever, or any kind of bleeding should be reported.

Re: Honduras: Dengue fever outbreaks

We arrived at 43 cases of hemorrhagic dengue

The statistics over the previous year, when only 18 cases were registered

San Pedro Sula, Honduras

The epidemic does not stop. Dengue has gained ground and the cases have exceeded the previous year's figures, by that date.

Julio Rodriguez, director of the Metropolitan Region of Health, reported that 43 people already going to have been confirmed dengue hemorrhagic fever, while in 2007 there were just 18 cases.

Of dengue fever, the list sum over in 2400 and last year there were only 855 cases.

"We have never reached this number, we enjoyed 39 and in one week, we confirmed five more," lamented the doctor.

He said that cases have proliferated in all the districts and colonies and could hardly talk about the most vulnerable areas.

"Before we were Chamelec?n, Caba?as, the Rivera Hernandez, but today there are sick people everywhere," the official said.

Call to employers

He added that while citizenship is not a can not put an end to this deadly disease.

"We met with municipal authorities to convene the members of employers across the city and work in unison," added the doctor.

To cope with dengue also have the new machine, bigger and better coverage.

With this team, last week sprayed the satellite sector and almost all homes are involved.

We are fumigating, but that is the last step.

People must be clear that if we do not clean the vacant plots and kills fish farms, we are not doing anything, "said the official.

They also have met with the technicians and inspectors of Health and call upon the military and the Fire Department.

About the mosquitoes

According to environmental health technicians, the biggest problem in San Pedro Sula and Puerto Cortes Choloma is because they are inhabited by different vectors.

Not only is the Aedes aegypti, which has been through the years, the transmitter of the disease was detected two years ago to Aedes albopictos also known as the Asian tiger.

The Aedes albopictos not only transmits dengue, but yellow fever.

It develops in natural and artificial reservoirs, ie is easier to reproduce.

Hospitalization

The classic and hemorrhagic dengue in bed has left dozens of people.

Only in the hospital Mario Rivas admitted persons with suspected dengue hemorrhagic fever each day.

The disease has attacked equally to children and adults.

Currently there are 12 to 15 cases a day.

The affected inmates remain at least three days until they are stabilized platelets.

So far this year there have been two deaths from hemorrhagic dengue in the Sula Valley.
