Dengue cases increase 40.4% in Honduras in 2020 with 10,973 patients

Dengue cases accounted for so far in 2020 in Honduras increased by 40.4%, a disease that has caused nine deaths in the country, the Health Ministry reported Monday.
The latest official report indicates that until last week, 10,973 cases of dengue were recorded, an increase of 40.4% compared to the same period in 2019, when 7,816 patients were reported.
Of the total cases of dengue, 9,951 patients correspond to the classic type, while the patients due to hemorrhagic or severe disease total 1,022, explained the coordinator of the Arbovirosis department of the Ministry of Health, Gustavo Urbina.
He pointed out that 95.7% of cases of severe dengue are concentrated in the Central District, which make up the cities of Tegucigalpa and Comayag?ela; San Pedro Sula (north); El Para?so and Olancho (east), and Choluteca (south).
Urbina indicated that the Central American country reports nine deaths confirmed through laboratory results.
According to the Ministry of Health, 78% of deaths from the disease, which can be fatal in its hemorrhagic modality, correspond to children under 15 years of age.
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of infected females of mosquitoes of the genus Aedes aegypti.
The official urged the population to avoid accumulations of water and take advantage of the curfew, which has been in force since March, to contribute to garbage collection, keep patios clean and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
"We have dengue and coronavirus, and both diseases kill, so it is necessary to increase cleaning activities in our homes," he emphasized.
The Aedes aegypti mosquito lives 30 days and can take eight days to develop the infection, then continue infecting other people for three weeks.
Dengue symptoms can be confused with other diseases.
