I think a key question is why the example was not in the paper. Both sets of parental sequences were human H3N2 and the recombinant was a full sequences, and had regions of recombination that were far greater than 100 BP.

Here is the recombinant. It is OBVIOUS recombination with half of the sequence from contemporary sequences from the late 1990's for the first half, and sequences from two decades earlier for the second half. The recombinant sequences is 2341 BP which is a FULL sequence. This paper has MAJOR problems (i.e. excludes data it doesn't like or simply is not what it says it is). The authors can argue all they want about this being some kind of contamination, but the paper appears to indicate that this recombinant doesn't exist, which is false. As noted below, complete CDS means it is a full sequence (and is human).

If they only used NIAID project sequences, then the number of full sequences should have been the same form all eight gene segments, which it was not.

I looked at PB1 from the recombinant, and the first 1937 positions match A/swine/Ontario/48235/04(H1N2), which does have a human PB1 from the mid 90's, but the match is a bit of a surprise.

If they only used NIAID project sequences, then the number of full sequences should have been the same form all eight gene segments, which it was not.
Just to clarify, the link in the Materials and Methods was to the flu database at Genbank. That databse has the PB2 recombiunant sequence from Hong Kong collected in 1997. The sequence is a obvious recombinant with 1/2 of the gene from contemporary sequences, and 1/2 the gene from the 1970's. Thus, a full sequence of the recombinant as well as full sequences of the parents were in the database, but were not cited in the paper. The example was much stronger than the two examples in the paper.

The is much more to come. I have been more focused on recombination in swine and avian flu sequences, so the human sequences need some catching up. However, there are glaring examples that have been excluded from this paper, which are in addition to examples that appear to meet all criteria, but are still missing.

This paper will get the attention it deserves, here and at Nature Precedings.

The random mutation myth will soon be history.

Those are whole genome sequencing samples by NIAID. As noted earlier, the database linked is NOT the NIAID database. It is the flu samples at Genbank. There was no requirement for all 8 gene sequences for the paper. As noted earlier, the number of samples per gene segment varies (as listed in the paper's table of analyzed sequences). The NIAID does not release sequences until all 8 are completed.

Why do they recombine with sequences decades old,
when no such preservations are found in other viruses in the database ?
Why don't those recombined viruses spread, but apparantly die ?

No, the genome project sequences all 8 gene segments so if only sequences from the whole genome project were used, the number of sequences would be the same for all 8 gene segments, as can be seen from your link (each sample has 8 sequences).
